Hey guys, Im hoping you can help me out here. I dont know much about speakers so Ill ask you. Are these inwall speakers overkill to use as my surrounds. I am going to have 4 surrounds, 2 on each side of my room. I was wondering if these speakers are way more than I need for the surround speakers. Thanks.

What does "overkill" even mean? I certainly wouldn't say that those are overkill.

Overkill? In what respect? I guess from a price perspective, some would say that the surrounds I have are overkill, but I don't think so: http://www.hifigear.co.uk/site/scripts/product_browse.php?product_id=4878&category_id=582

I guess it depends on what the rest of your equipment is and what your requirements are as far as balancing out your system.

It depends on many things.

Mainly:
what are your fronts
what is your primary listening HT or multichannel music
what is your budget
how much do you care about the nth degree of possible performance?

Having just done a theater with about $150,000K of JUST surround speakers, the answers to these questions will lead to vastly different kinds of solutions. One cannot simply ask whether a particular speaker is overkill, since it depends on the application and the need.

$150,000K? Isn't that $150 Million? Now thats overkill :)

Ok, I'll bite. What were they and how many were there?

It was probably Fabio's home theater, so it must of been Krell :)

Naw. Fabio's system doesn't even come close. As a matter of fact, I can't see how surround speakers can cost 150k in anyones home theater. Revel makes one of the most expensive surrounds out there at 5k a apiece. I really am curious how one can spend 150k on surrounds.

But hey, I guess ANYTHING is possible. Check out the following link:

The speakers can never be overkill, but the room can be too small! :D

Thanks for the replies guys. I was going to go with this setup, except using the inwalls instead of the included surrounds.

Im hooking it all up with a Onkyo 705 receiver. My room is about 11.5'X26' I would like to go with inwalls because I plan to install them inside of 4 columns on the sides of my room. I would like to go with inwall speakers so the columns dont have to be very deep. This setup it going to be for Movies only. Its dedicated HT room. Basically what I meant by overkill is. That surround speakers dont put out that much sound, and is only used a certain points during a movie. So I wouldnt think you would need a pricey(in my eyes) speaker for the surrounds. But Im sure Im missing something here.

Um, don't know if you only watch comedies and period dramas or what, but many movies can have quite a lot of surround activity, and at high levels. $300/pair for surround speakers is cheap....that is less than the price of entry-level surrounds for most companies.

Without seeing your room and seating layout, none of us comment on how many surrounds you should run, but that is an extremely narrow deep space.

Thanks for the replys. Im still in the framing stage of my HT. The actual seating area is only 17' long. The area behind that is bar/game area. So I dont need to worry about sound there. Basically I was just wondering if you think those in walls would be a good speaker, quality, and price wise to group it with this HT package, minus the surrounds in the package. Thanks.

I have full range floor standers all the way around.

It's not overkill IMO.

It's all in the eye of the beholder...
