I am having a weird problem with one of my Vision HDP’s. My setup is as follows…

DirecTV HR20, DirecTV HR10-250 and Sony PS3 going into a 3 way HDMI switcher going into input 1 of the HDP (firmware 012608). The HDP outputs 1:1 pixel mapping 768P to my Panny 50 inch 8UK. I use 1080i output on the HR10-250, 1080i output on the PS3 and native resolution output on the HR-20.

I was playing a movie over my network using the media server option on the PS3 and TwonkyMedia on the server. The movie was Daddy Day Camp ripped to my server’s hard drive. The PS3 does not have a native output so the 480i DVD rip is upconverted in the PS3 to 1080i. The movie is cropped off approximately ½ inch at the bottom of the screen. Once I noticed this I went through my entire collection of movies that I stream via my server. About 20 of the 200 DVD rips on my server have this problem. I then tried TVersity and had the same results. All movies that have the problem are 480i 16:9 upconverted to 1080i.

Once I noticed that more of the movies did this I burned the movies to DVD’s and tried them using the PS3’s DVD player. The movies work fine this way but are outputted to the HDP at 480p. I then decided to change the output resolution of the PS3. When I choose 480p the movies do not crop at the bottom even when streaming them from my server. When I use either 720p or 1080i they crop at the bottom. Since this problem seemed to be tied to the PS3 I decided to put one of my other PS3’s in this setup. No change. I have three PS3’s and they all act the same. I am assuming at this point that the PS3 has a bug that is causing this.

My next step was going straight from the PS3 to the TV. When I do this it does not crop. The only time it crops is with the HDP in the setup. Then I decided to change the output resolution of the HDP. When I output 480P or 540P from the Lumagen to the TV it does not crop. When I choose 720P, 1080i, 768P or 768P with 1:1 timings it crops. Still not sure what is going on but I chalk it up to the PS3 since this is the only device I noticed this on.

About a week later I also experienced the same thing using the DirecTV HR-20 while watching a recorded episode of WWE Smackdown. This show was recorded from the OTA input in HD. Since I record the show on both the HR-20 and the HR10-250 I tried it on the HR10-250. It crops on both. Wire around the HDP and they both work fine (do not crop). Output either of them to the Lumagen at 480P and they work fine. So now I have all of my input devices experiencing the same problem. That tells me it is a Lumagen issue. I then tried different firmwares all the way back to 112206 and had no success. I have tried inputs 1 and 2 and wired around the HDMI switcher with no success.

I have two other Vision HDP’s with same setups except for the display. One is a Panny 42 inch 8UK doing 1:1 and one is a JVC HD-61FN97 doing 1:1 1080P. Neither of these systems have this problem.

All of these systems were professionally setup and calibrated. This system was setup in July 2006. I cannot say how long I have had this issue since I just noticed it (you can hardly tell when watching from a normal distance – I only noticed when I was on top of the TV) and just recently added the PS3 to this setup. It is possible that I just have a setting wrong in the Lumagen but I tried a couple of things with no results and do not want to be changing some other things that I am not sure about.

In a nutshell, I do not experience the problem when sending the HDP a 480i or 480P signal or if I output 480P or 540P from the Lumagen to the TV regardless of its input resolution. The problem only occurs when sending the Lumagen a 1080i or 720p signal. I have only noticed this problem on one TV show. It definitely happens more on the PS3.

Does anyone have a clue why this is happening? Any help is appreciated. I hope I included enough information. Thanks in advance.
