Hi,

I have just set up PS3 for PAL DVDs on my XG and have run into the off-centre problem with 1080i/50Hz. I have seen threads confirming this is a known problem but no solutions. Previously i been using HTPC so have fixed similar problems with porch settings but am unsure how to fix it at the PJ end. Right now i am about 2" short of center at 100% shift. Based on my limited experience and a little quick reading:

"Shift" settings do not stress the PJ (?) so if i can get it centred even near max shift this should be OK (?)

Far as i can tell the only option is to go back and use raster center (and perhaps phase). The image will move with the raster - right?

But if i recall - 2" is a relatvely large move using Raster Centering. Is this likely to be a problem and how does this involve Phase.

Or - is there a better way, pehaps even move the PJ? Thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

Bill

I think the only fix is a scaler, unless you can force the PS3 to a 60Hz output.

Unless your throw is MAXED out, 50mm of Raster Centering won't be the end of the world. But you may find you need more, as you do need to prevent image wrap.

The porches are so damned big you can't have a super aggressive throw...anyway.

I don't think it involves Phase really at all.

But the question begs....what are you watching at 1080i 50hz on a PS3? Bluray will be 1080i 60hz (with 3:2 pulldown...bad luck). And PAL DVD would be fine at 720p 50hz.

Are there 50hz Bluray discs? Of TV shows or something?

Yes the problem is with upscaled DVD - I had heard that the PS3 did a really good job of this. Having set 1080i as my prefferred setting for Bluray it then also appears to become the default for upscaling. That said i did take a quick look at 720p upscaled and its no better - or perhaps worse - than 1080i. While i can centre the image with 720p i max out image size before filling the screen. (I assume maximising size this way is also just a timig issue and not stressing the PJ?)

Had hoped to at least get an acceptable DVD image out of the PS3 to simplify use for my wife and make the HTPC available for other uses - perhaps thats not going to happen.
