So which do you guys think has the better picture?
The XBR800 is an XBR, but the HS420 is newer and may have the advantage of newer tech. They're both the same resolution, correct?
Which one should I get? Assuming both are in good condition.

I'll toss out a few random comments, though I'm not positive on all of them. The tubes are comparable to one another. Both have been reported to have the vertical scrolling bar problem with 1080i inputs but the HS420 has the passthrough hardware installed but the XBR800 may not have the hw. AFAIK, neither has an ATSC tuner. The XBR800 has adjustable DRC and the HS420 doesn't. The XBR800 likely has more hours on it. The XBR800 has a subwoofer and the HS420 doesn't. I've read a couple of reports that the HS420 doesn't have dynamic convergence enabled, though I doubt this could be accurate. The HS420 MAY allow zooming of HD material, the XBR800 locks into FULL mode.

The HS420 also locks into FULL mode in HD

I believe that xbr800 also has dual view and memory stick. Dual view is pretty fun to mess around with, but I do not use it much often on my xbr960 same with memory stick. I would choose xbr800 just because of DRC alone if I was buying.

DRC only works with 480i inputs, right?
