I own both Bluray and HDDVD and I still prefer my HDDVD movies and players!
HD-XA2 and HD-A35...DMP-BD30 for bluray.
I already have all my favorite films on both formats and will not be replacing King Kong, Matrix Trilogy etc, with Blu.
So the queston is:
Will you continue to enjoy and support HDDVD?
OR,:
Will you switch everything and support BluRay?

in before lock...

What's there to support after the last WB release? People with big HD DVD collections aren't likely to dump everything and re-buy.

I'll buy blu when there's something worth buying on it.

Whatever is cheaper, in stock and available at the moment. Very simple.

This poll will not make it if the results are not to the liking of some around here. Might as well just close it now because opinions on this don't matter anymore.

I already have both and will continue enjoying both. Life is too short.

I agree. I love high def movies. I will enjoy my HD DVDs and my XA2 and A1 players, but I expect to see some BD movies down the pike that I will want to purchase (already have 22). I am waiting to see what the Panasonic BD50can do.

My preferred format didn't win. I enjoy movies the best they can be displayed and at this point in time that is Blu-ray.

There's not enough options in the poll. If they sell HD-DVD titles in the UK for ultra cheap prices, I may buy some of them, otherwise I probably won't (because if my HD-DVD player stops working in future I won't be able to play them, there probably won't be cheap replacement players available, and I would have been better off buying the DVD (or Blu-ray) etc.)

Cheapest. Have both HD DVD and Blu Ray players. So if it is under $10 I buy. All HD DVD after the Warner announcement. No Blu for $10 or under. Loads of HD DVDs in the last few weeks, all under $10. Still maintaining my under $10 average for all HDM discs.

I want to get Pitch Black and Serenity for cheap, but then I'm done. There won't be anything to support in a few months, besides previous titles and upkeep on your players.

I don't "support" a format. I'm a consumer not a cheer leader.

For the record, I've switched to Blu-Ray for new purchases, and I actually stopped using my HD-DVD player several months ago because my XBOX360 add-on is no match for my PS3 in terms of video quality, for a multitude of reasons, some of them peculiar to my system.

I won't be supporting HD DVD any longer. The format is dead and the founders have given up on it. I already had one high definition format (D-Theater) that was abandoned, and now I have two. It's a complete waste to go out and buy a bunch of HD DVD material at this point IMO... at least for me.

That being said, I will not be buying Blu-Ray anytime soon either. I actually did research a few days ago as I almost gave in and bought a Blu-Ray player, but the uncertainty of Blu-Ray profiles, a final standard, and sheer lack of urgency by the BDA to lower prices and offer incentives now that they are the only kid on the block is keeping me away.

For now I am happy with the amount of HD content from my cable provider, HD downloads from Live Marketplace, and well upscaled DVD's. The only real thing I feel I am lacking is true high definition audio, but it seems several studios aren't too eager to even offer that on Blu-Ray on all their releases yet.

I'll check back on Blu-Ray in a couple months. Until then, I just don't think the extra cost warrents the slight improvement that is novelty and eye candy, but doesn't really ever make a bad movie better.

Note: I didn't place a vote for either choice.

I might buy the ocassional firesale item for the right price ($20'ish for the Complete Matrix trilogy sounds about right... maybe $40 or so for TOS Season 1). But the rest? Pscha!

I have many HD DVD movies and I am seriously thinking of picking up an A35 as a second player to protect my investment in case my A1 bites the dust. I also own a Philips BDP9000 BD player (1.0 with no advanced audio codec support or bitstream passing) and will only buy BD movies not available on HD DVD and only if they have LPCM tracks. I also plan in the future of buying a 2.0 BD Player that can offer all of the features of the A35 at a reasonable price with internal audio codec support for all advanced codecs. I think I have a very long wait.

Personally, I think my next venture into another HD format may be from XstreamHD. No more shiney discs for me. That said, I truly hope BD players come down in price and up in features so that replacing my BDP9000 makes sense. Show me a standalone BD player that can decode DTS HD MA and other high end codecs and I start to become interested. Better yet, just drop DTS HD MA and go with TrueHD. Fox, you listening?

I am still buying HD DVDs when I find good deals, but I will run out of titles I want very soon. My discs and players are not going anywhere. In the future, of course, all my new purchases will be Blu-ray discs.

No offense OP, but this is freakin ridiculous. HD-DVD is only fine for movies that have already been released on it. Very very soon there will be no more new releases put on the format. Most studios have dropped support completely. Why would you support a dying format? Loyalty? Do you think Toshiba and M$ have loyalty to you? They don't.

The reason I stop buying HD DVD is what the hell am I gonna do with them if the player breaks down in the future? Imagine if I have +50 of it. I don't own any LD but when that broke down, where did you guys send it for repair? I have an A-35. Does anyone here own a toshiba product that lasted as long as sony products? These are the questions that made me hesitate.

I've been a sony person when it comes to TV, DVD player or stereo and all of them have lasted though the years with no problems despite frequent use. Toshiba? I don't know anyone personally who has experience with it.

So having only 6 HD DVD isn't painful enough down the road if ever the player breaks down. And replacing 6 HD DVD for 6 BD isn't so bad.

That's right in your case, but the actual prices of players and software make it attractive to buy more of them.

However, lot of speculation in your post: Why should Tosh quality be worse than Sony's. I have a large HD collection and 3 different players now, and there is no sign that the one or the other will stop working soon.

And since you mentioned Laserdisc: don't worry, LD players are still repaired and serviced by Pioneer service centers. I bought my first LD player when the format was already dead. Now I have 350 LDs and more than one player...

It makes perfect sense for people with huge HD DVD library to buy a backup player at lower rates. Even if there are no HD DVDs the player will still be able to play SD DVDs and upconvert them to near HD quality (as Toshiba claims). I mean given a choice of 3 High end upconverting players namely the Oppo ($200), Denon ($700) and HD-XA2 ($400) it makes sense to buy the XA-2. The law of diminishing returns will come into effect over a period of time making our past investments look like a puppy.

I will keep buying the HD-DVD exclusives I want including imports. I have blu ray already. But figure why deny your self HD while the other format plays catch up. Id imagine the universal movies are a ways off still in terms of a blu-ray versiosn.

Plus many of my imports will never see a region a blu-ray. Maybe a region free version but unlikely.

I live in Europe and I have two BD players (one is American). But I will wait a little longer before building my collection until I can get a region-free player - or see how the format develops. Right now, I'm still fully at DVD side.

Big Caveat here:
IF you have and extra HDMI port or space for a 2nd player...

Then HD DVD is amazing right now!! $9 HD movies, most of which are not available on Blu-ray. Players being sold for next to nothing. It will be 5 to 10 years before we see prices like these for other HDM.

There are no experation dates on players and discs are 1080p, so if you love HDM, why wouldn't you be jumping all over this...unless you are still bitter from the war.:D

Best post I have read all week.

A consumer will look at the combination of price and how much he wants to own a film. If he has both type of players already, then "format" means virtually nothing to him.

Buy HD-DVD until I run out of movies worth buying. Ill buy Blu-Ray when the profile 2.0 players are sub 150.
