View Full Version : Anyone see a whacky magenta color on Sony Pearl?

This is for all the Pearl owners out there. Have you noticed that a particular shade of red, bordering on magenta, is way more over-saturated than any other color this projector displays?

I'm not really complaining (that's not the point of this), I'm just sort of wondering if anyone else has seen the same thing because I find it quite strange that one particular color would be so out of whack compared to the rest of the color spectrum -- even most shades of red look fine, epecially after taking Greg Roger's advice and lowering red by a few clicks in Sony's psuedo-CMS.

Before you decide that your projector is immune, know this: that one wierd shade of red does not show up very much at all, so it's possible your Pearl could have the same strange behavior and you wouldn't even have realized it.

But when it does show up, that one particular shade of red is INSANE. It is a shade of red that shows up only in light, as in the light from a flare, or the light from the red effect-lights at a rock concert, or a tail light on a car (it shows up here a lot, but it's such a small area of the screen in these situations that you wouldn't notice the strangeness unless you were looking for it.) You have the same evaluation problem with rock concert footage -- even when the color shows up, it's hard to spot its "wrongness," for lack of a better term.

The best scene that I've found to evaluate it is in the HD version of the movie The Descent. It shows up a lot in this movie in the strange torch and flare light. It's especially whack during the scene where they're crossing the chasm, especially in the first distance shot of it, but it shows up a lot both before and after that. The Descent is a good movie in general for evaluating this issue because it's very clear that the color is not right.

Anyway, if any of you have Pearls, I'd be interested in whether or not any of you have noticed something similar. It's not a big deal, I'm just curious.

Does the whacky color appear even if you turn off RCP?

I have not seen this issue, and I don't use RCP.

I'm pretty sure it does. I will double check to be sure. Of course, the trick will be finding some content where I can see the issue. Makes me wish I had recorded The Descent.

See, the funny thing is that the color actually comes across as quite pleasing in a lot of scenes because it's a very deep, rich color that tends to pop up in artificially lit situations where its inaccuracy is not glaring. But every now and then, a scene will pop up that makes it obvious that something's not right.

The Descent is a good example. There were also a few scenes in The Devil's Rejects. It's one of those issues that's even hard for me to describe, meaning I might actually have to have someone over at my house and physically point to the screen and say "that's it" before they'd start to notice it.

But once you notice it, there's no going back. Maybe the key is to not notice it. :-)
