View Full Version : Long or Short power cords any difference
joeycalda 03-12-08, 01:47 AM Hello,
I do not want to mount a power conditioner near my projector and also I would like the area around the projector to look neat. I have done the A/B testing, and my projectors image looks better when used in conjunction with a power conditioner. Richard Gray Monster PS Audio Equitech etc..
Most of my power products are about 20 feet of cable from the projector. I was considering having a special power cord built and just wanted some opinions on wheteher or not you feel that a shorter cord from the conditioner would yeild different results than a longer cord. My thought is probably not, but I am open for suggestions and real world answers!!
Thanks,
Joey
Steve Bruzonsky 03-12-08, 02:07 AM I used a 25' Granite Audio power cord with toroids each end for high frequency noise filtering with my prior CRT. Its for sale now (hint)!
However, upon ditching the broken down CRT, I am now using 10 guage Romex in wall
from an outlet in back of my component rack in wall to an outlet in the ceiling by my new digital projector. I am using the Powerbridge in wall kit for the outlets. I have an APC S15 UPS sinewave/conditioner unit in my component rack that I use for my Sim2 C3X 1080, Lumagen Radiance, Zektor HDMI switcher (yes, I can use either one depending how I like the picture) (I have a PS Audio Premier Power Plant for my audio and other front end components). The UPS is so I have battery power for my projector to cool down in case of Az brownouts, which do occur.
Watch out. Here comes Curt. Wonder what he will say? (HA! HA!)

As I renovated my theater, including several conduits in wall for my new digital projector wiring and moving the projector back some from where it had been before, I decided this time to hide the power cord in wall. Technically
the Granite Audio and other "audiophile" power cords aren't rated for in wall.
And where I always felt the power cord excelled was that my in walll Romex is all 10 guage, the power cord is 10 guage, and the power cord has proprietary toroids around each end for high frequency noise reduction.
Our subjective testing some years ago indicated that the power cord improved both audio and video compared to a more generic power cord even when connected to a PS Audio P600 power regenerator at the time of the test - leading us to theorize that the toroids make the difference, that as the clean regenerated power leaves the regenerator it picks up high frequency noise.
I use a five foot Granite Audio power cord from the ceiling to my projector so I get the benefits.

I'll PM you off the forum.
Curt Palme 03-12-08, 10:32 AM Nope, this time I say nothing, other than your DWIN is now installed in a recording studio in Quebec and is running fine..;)

COOL! What type of recording studio? How wide of a screen? 16:9?
Curt Palme 03-12-08, 11:47 AM Not sure exactly what they do, but I think it's on a 10' wide screen (!). It replaced an old worn out Zenith PRO 851. They LOVE the set, they jus bought a second DWIN for their other studio.
joeycalda 03-12-08, 02:26 PM that as the clean regenerated power leaves the regenerator it picks up high frequency noise.
That was my concern. I might be able to do an A/B , using an extension cord to mimic the longer power cord. Pretty sure the Romex in the theater room in 10 gauge as well.
Hey Curt 7 weeka and still o MOOME input board for the CRT!! I ordered that the day you sent out the email. The $495 charge hit my credit card, but still no card. Should I be concerned? Or is this normal??
Thanks ,
Joey
Glimmie 03-12-08, 03:10 PM For 20 feet of cord at 120vrms and the output impedance from the power conditioner let's say a few ohms at most, you aren't going to pick up any significant HF on the power cord unless you are next to an antenna farm with several high power transmitters in use.
That said, you can simply use MC cable with breakout boxes on each end to keep the wire shielded.
Your are throwing deck chairs off the Titanic here. If you see a difference then go for it. But I doubt there is any measurable difference between a custom expensive power cord and a Home Depot extension cord.
