View Full Version : Help me which movie to cut from my online orders
sweetmisery 03-12-08, 01:47 PM Since Im from the Philippines, I order movies quarterly to save on shipping. Next month, Ill order lots, which is reaching the $400 limit I got. I need to trim it down...
Below are the movies that I havent seen or own, but a bit willing to get rid. I didnt list those Im sure to be getting...
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - havent seen this. Is this worth it? (and no, I rather not rent, I like buying movies which many said is great then watch it for the first time in BR... besides, no BR rental here)
No Country for Old Men - same with Jesse James
Gone Baby Gone - same with Jesse James
AVP - Alien vs. Predator / Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem (Unrated Two-Pack) - is AVP1 even the double-dip Fox said? If not, I rather wait for it.
I, Robot - like the film. Worth it in BR?
Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics - is this really necessary?
Michael Clayton - havent seen this one either.
Water Horse - havent see this one, but I love sea monsters. I know its a family movie, but is it as good or atleast close to Free Willy?
THANKS!!!
Drandonuts 03-12-08, 02:04 PM Jesse James: I wasn't a fan of this movie or Blu-ray. The movie felt a bit too long, and the disc had a bad transfer. I'd pass.
No Country: Great movie and disc.
Gone Baby Gone: Same as No Country.
AVP 2 Pack: Pass on this.
I, Robot: Can't say. I thought the movie was OK, but not 30 dollars OK.
HD Basics: Haven't used this disc.
Michael Clayton: This was a letdown. Just a by the numbers political thriller. Good transfer, though.
Water Horse: Haven't seen.
Eric D. 03-12-08, 02:07 PM I'd get rid of the AVP pack for sure. They were both awful movies and even if you like them, a better version of the first one is coming out later.
cardiac161 03-12-08, 02:25 PM Hi sweetmisery.
My brother is currently working in the Philippines for a 2 yr term. He is also as much a film buff as I am and insists on working on his own collection, so I can understand the cost.
Here are my thoughts:
Assassination of Jesse James - decent film but quite long and only good for one viewing
No Country for Old Men - awesome film and definitely worth it (but don't expect closure as expected fm a Coen Bros film. PQ is outstanding!!)
Gone Baby Gone - if you liked Mystic River, you might like this one
AvP - as others have said, forget it. Crap movies to begin with.
I, Robot - haven't seen the BR so can't tell what the PQ/AQ would be
Michael Clayton - good film but not worth getting the BR. Rent it on standard dvd
Water Horse - haven't seen it
30XS955 User 03-12-08, 02:27 PM I am puzzled why Water Horse is on your list in the first place. Easy answer.
For what it's worth...
I've seen four of these films. I, Robot you are familair with so I won't comment on it. I haven't seen the BR dis yet to comment on its quality personally, but reviews are good. The other three films I saw on your list are The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Gone Baby Gone, and Michael Clayton. All are good films. Gone Baby Gone is my favorite. Michael Clayton is my least favorite. But I think all are top notch. Opinions may vary on these, however.
No Country for Old Men I haven't seen, but I look forward to any Coens brothers movie. Hard to cut it, considering it also won best picture.
Actually, I lied, I did see AVP as well. Forget about that. Not a big fan, and the 2-pack should be re-released soon with more extras. Would be my first choice to cut.
Hard to say too much about the rest, not familiar enough with them.
sweetmisery 03-12-08, 02:51 PM Oh, so the 2 pack doesnt have the AVP double dipped disc?
Anyway, thanks all! If it doesnt(AVP) then that will be the one out. 2nd will be either WH or Clayton. As of why WH is in there, I guess I need something for anyone to watch, esp. kids. Plus as I said, I love sea monsters!!! lol
@cardiac161 - which part of the Phils. is he from?
Anyway, THANKS ALL so far!
Eric D. 03-12-08, 03:09 PM Oh, so the 2 pack doesnt have the AVP double dipped disc?
Nope, just the previously released one.
p0seidon 03-12-08, 03:12 PM The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - Great Flick, if you enjoy Long, Artistic movies. This is by no means any action, or thriller. Pretty good bluray review.
No Country for Old Men - Really Good, movie, Id suggest it. Pretty good bluray review
Gone Baby Gone - haven't seen it, hear good things about it.
AVP - Alien vs. Predator / Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem (Unrated Two-Pack) - Id look for other options or cut this.
I, Robot - Terrific PQ/AQ qualities, great movie Highly suggested.
Digital Video Essentials: Not needed necessarily, you can read info on forums on how to tweak your TV.
Michael Clayton - Decent Movie, I havent quite decided myself on this one yet.
Water Horse - Havent seen it, nor read bluray review.
talbain 03-12-08, 03:29 PM would you like me to help you pick out the clothes you'll wear tomorrow while we're at it?
The only one on your list that I have seen is Water Horse. It is a fantasy, but it is pretty intense at times, especially during the military shelling scenes. There is a great deal of CGI, but it is very well done. I really enjoyed it, but of course, I can't know whether you would.
You might do well to spend a little time checking movie reviews to see if you will enjoy the movies on your list.

I have a feeling Ill enjoy them all, and yes, I have read the movie reviews. Its a matter of cutting now, which - to those whove seen most of them, if not all - deserves to be cut, due to budget restraints.
As of AVP, I love Aliens/Predator movies. And since their respective movies arent out yet(except Predator soon, which Ill be getting in this batch), Ill settle with this. But since theres no double dip AVP in the 2 pack, Ill cut it I guess.
Thanks though, I might get WH afterall. lol. Anyway was it nearly as good as Free Willy?
shadowrage 03-12-08, 03:47 PM Michael Clayton.
It feels like a longer movie than Jesse James. It is so freaking boring. And you wont know what is going on for the entire first hour. The last 20 minutes are good, just watch those last scenes. And Tilda Swinton won an oscar for maybe 6 minutes screen time, without any memorable lines.
BAMAVADER 03-12-08, 04:30 PM Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics -is this really necessary
No
trent82 03-12-08, 04:37 PM if you want good answers, you should tell us what some of your favorite movies are, because pretty much anyone is going to tell you to ditch avp and definitely get no country for old men. but if you love bad popcorn movies like avp, maybe it is actually the better choice for you.
in my opinion, these are the important first quarter blu-ray releases, all of which could be yours for about $175 + shipping
3:10 To Yuma
Sunshine
The Assassination Of Jesse James
Gone Baby Gone
Michael Clayton
In The Valley Of Elah
No Country For Old Men

+1 but not as huge of a fan of Sunshine (I consider that more of a rental than a "need to own").
suffolk112000 03-12-08, 05:21 PM would you like me to help you pick out the clothes you'll wear tomorrow while we're at it?
No, but someone needs to help you pick sports franchises. :D Sorry... couldn't resist. :D
