I have this unit connected to my Denon AVR-1602. I can get it to play DVDs and tapes but not to record. Am I wrong in thinking that the cable TV signal can be routed through the Denon to the Samsung, or do I have to route the cable signal directly to the Samsung?
Advice appreciated. :)
Thanks.

Not familiar with your Sammy, but assuming it has a tuner, and your Denon has RF passthru, what you want to do should work.
If your Sammy has the ability to turn OFF the RF modulator(assuming it has one) you could try having the cable go to the Sammy first, then your Denon?

The Sammy does not have a tuner. I don't know what an "RF passthru" is. Please advise.

You are not the first one lately to get confused by the mish-mash of tunerless DVD recorders. It's going to get worse now that both Panasonic and Toshiba are selling them as half their product line. A tuner has to be in the chain somewhere. This DVDR is designed primariy for people with cable/sat and a DVR who just want to use it to burn to DVD-R select programs of interest. It has to be fed a tuned signal from somewhere -- DVR, STB, ext. tuner, VCR tuner, etc. -- into it's line-inputs. It cannot function on it's own.

The RF input jjeff referred to is the antenna/cable connector you'll find on probably all your other components with a tuner. No tuner = no RF input.

Right, you would need a set-top box of some sort, and an AV cable to hook that from your STB's output into the input on your DVDR in order to use TV as a source. You also better be careful if your cable STB is copy-protected. I'd look into the DP-5000 gadget if you wish to record television if that's the case. That's where I had trouble with my DVDR/Cable Box setup, there was copy-protection on even the local broadcast channels, which was very disappointing. Of course, since my DVDR had a tuner, I was dumb enough to hook up my DVDR and STB in via coax, which was probably the reason why that copy-protection took place. I know that this isn't the exact topic, but my DVDR was a Samsung. I was still originally looking at this model to replace it, but decided on another brand instead.
