Hi Guys,

I hadnt used my XG for a while and decided to fire it up today. It fired up ok had a picture et al but after about 40 odd seconds I got a red box on the screen with the warning error that my fan had stopped. Ten-fifteen seconds after that the projector automatically shuts down and the rear led numbers alternate between 00 and 03. I have looked up the NEC XG error codes and there is no mention of error code 03.

I pulled the top off the projector then manually inspected the three fans below the tubes, the fan on the power board, the three fans on the side of the chassis (ie 2 one side and 1 on the other side of the card cage) and they were all spinning while the projector was on. I even removed the power supply and fired the unit up to make sure its two fans at the back were spinning. It all looks good.

Any idea what error code 03 means and any idea where the fault is? Has anyone seen this before? Have I missed a fan?

Thanks

you're most likely reeading it upside down. The error is E0. Either a fan has seized up or the HV board has a bad component on it. That board also has the fan circuitry on it.

Hi Curt/All

Yup I was reading the display upside down......*embarrassed*

Unless I have it wrong including the 2 fans in the power supply there are 9 fans in the XG. I have confirmed that all are spinning while the projector is running up until it switches itself off. So I will swap out the board with a spare to see if thats it.

Many thanks

DON'T DO THAT!

Each HV board is specifically calibrated to the tubes, the power supply, the H board and the HV transformer. While a different board will work, it will have a different HV, and can kill other areas of the set or the tubes. While you can put another board in temporarily, that original board needs to be repaired (unless you have a HV probe and the knowledge to deal with 34,000 volts.

Well he is, down-under. :D How’s it going, mate.

Yep, 9 fans.

You can swap the HV boards, I've done it. You just need to set the HV pot so the PJ is focused electrically - which will be at the same HV level as the old board, and then go through the HV protect high and low procedures.
But it's not for the faint hearted, and there is risk the the HV will be WAY too high, or way too low and off the edge of the tubes.

If all fans are running there will be a simple fault with the fan detection circuitry - which can be disabled, but only as a last resort (Doug would kill me..).

If the HV board has the orig pots they will be sealed and would need to be replaced with the correct values then adjusted. Procedure is in the service manual but not to be done by a novice, it needs to be followed exact. To be safe after checking the fans send it to have done so it will match the chassis and wave board focus.

It sounds like you have parts there. If so use another known good fan and try removing one at a time and plug in the known good one going down the fan connectors until the E0 error is cleared. This should show the defective fan.

If a fan is slow starting or sluggish it can trigger the detect fault even when its turning or the sensing circuit could be defective. I would suspect the belly fans first then the one on the deflection tunnel heat sync. Listen for a ticking sound, you might have a wire hitting on a fan blade where you cant see it. Doug
