View Full Version : 1996 9500 w/fungus would you change bellows too?
armstrr 03-13-08, 10:31 AM the pj has fungus, so "i'm goin in!"
those who have done this: have you changed the bellows out at the same time? or is this an unneccesary procedure (unless i damage them in the process).
i thought i remembered reading that vdc used a new compound that didn't allow moisture to migrate like the originals did.
would the newer compound help prevent reoccurance of this problem or is it just the steal screws and metal surfaces interacting.
i've heard the bellows are 100 to 150 each from vdc. while i'ld prefer not to spend the money, please let me know if it is something that should be done while the pj is ripped apart anyway.
thanks,
robb
Paul Butler 03-13-08, 02:22 PM Bellows are $50(US) each from VDC.

Chuchuf 03-13-08, 03:03 PM While you are there you really should change the bellows and add the red CElement.
Terry
armstrr 03-13-08, 03:45 PM ok, 150 for all 3!! that's definately easier to swallow!
thanks terry, it actually has r and g c-elements. i believe you actually installed them for the former owner a few years back.
Chuchuf 03-14-08, 11:02 AM Ah I know the PJ.
That is so weird that they develop fungus like that.

Curt Palme 03-14-08, 11:08 AM If you can get bellows for $150 for three, I wanna know. The last ones I bought were $150 each.

Ok, I'm holding the VDC invoice dated 30th January 2008 in my hand, it reads "Miscellaneous Bellows...... $50 each"
I also bought a red C-Element which cost $150.
Edit - I can still feel the disbelief from here, ok gimme 5 minutes and I'll scan the invoice! - OK, done. Oh Ye of Little Faith - now do you believe me. Thats a pint you are owe me Mr Palme! :¬) I'll remove the invoice later tonight once Curt admits he's wrong and sends me some money for beer!
Invoice Deleted.

armstrr 03-14-08, 05:01 PM does vdc use stainless fill screws now? if so, i might as well get them at the same time
Paul: i'm a believer!!
draganm 03-14-08, 07:20 PM I have never heard of bellows that cheap, was Paul the victim of a happy accident? :D
nuttall_chris 03-14-08, 08:22 PM When I was ordered a red c-element last year I asked about bellows at the same tiime and VDC said they were $50. But that was almost a year ago.
Chris.
Curt Palme 03-14-08, 10:16 PM Well I'll call Monday. Thanks!
Paul Butler 03-15-08, 01:39 AM was Paul the victim of a happy accident? :D
No but my folks tell me I was the result of one :D

armstrr 03-17-08, 09:26 AM darn, just logged on to snag a phone # off your receipt, paul!! i'm going to do some googling to see if i can get gina at vdc's #. in the mean time, can someone post it in case i'm not sucessful?
curt, any luck?
preferabbly an 800 #. i'm currently at a resort in florida and the wife lost the calling card!!!
do the parts come from their location at cape canavral or georgia?
thanks,
armstrr 03-17-08, 09:42 AM ok, found the calling card and called a 1800# that doug b. had posted, they gave me 321 7844427 and talked with rich. he said they don't normally deal with non-corperate entities and said for me to call back in an hour to see if he could place the order for me...anyone have gina's direct line...it sounds lilke she has dealt with individuals before
draganm 03-17-08, 12:09 PM ok, found the calling card and called a 1800# that doug b. had posted, they gave me 321 7844427 and talked with rich. he said they don't normally deal with non-corperate entities and said for me thats a load of crap, us lowly "individuals" have been buying from VDC for years. When I call the 800 number I ask for Gina Directly by name Phone: 1-800-241-5005
The number they gave was novatron in Louisianna, they don't really handle csutomer support there AFAIK
Paul Butler 03-17-08, 02:13 PM Sorry, I thought it best to remove the receipt sooner rather than later. Dragan has kindly given you the same number as is contained in the receipt.
Good luck and please let us know how you get on (if you get stuck just post and you'll get help pronto!).
Paul

OH crap wrong forum how the hell did I get here on AVS????......Well if you have a boat you have an anchor for it so get it ready for spring the weather is getting nice and will be boating season before you know it!
armstrr 03-18-08, 10:10 AM well, paul, you must have been lucky, cause i got through to gina and was told $100each. i mentioned the $50 and she said it was old pricing.
so if i pass on the bellows for now and just clean up the chamber, paint it, replace the fill screws and put fresh glycol, what's the worse that can happen? some sweating? how much and is there any electronics directly below?
thanks,
robb

well that sucks for sure but at least you can still get them :(
so if i pass on the bellows for now and just clean up the chamber, paint it,
paint it? :confused:I'm not sure that's a good idea at all. If the Glycol is as corrosive as everyone say's it is then you really don't want paint in there. I think originally the Alum. is anodized, which unfortunately isn't a perfect coating and has pin-holes in it. IF anything, I would look into powder coating, that's a baked on Ceramic finish and it's fairly cheap.
replace the fill screws and put fresh glycol, what's the worse that can happen? some sweating? how much and is there any electronics directly below?
thanks, robb Well if you hang it from the ceiling there wouldn't be any electronics below it. Only for your favorite couch in which case that would suck too.:D
They sell these things for machine shops called "absorb it mats" , we call them machine diapers. A few strips of that stuffed between the LC plates would take care of any sweating that migth happen.

Damn! If I'd known that I would have bought 100 of them  They're not worth $100, no way. I mean thats DOUBLE the price they were a few weeks ago! Problem is of course no-one else has them.
Sorry Robb, not good news at all.
Paul
Does anyone know what glue a person should use to glue the bellows to the frame?
Does anyone know how to clamp while drying?
This is on a Barco 1209s.
Thanks
Steve

Black RTV Silicone is the only stuff I have ever seen used to glue CRT tubes in and i'm sure its the same stuff on the bellows.

Rob that's a very small tube for $8. Go to home depot and get a calk-gun cartridge of black RTV for $5.00 and it will do all of your tubes and Bellows with RTV to spare. There's nothing fancy here, Black RTV is Black RTV. The only time special RTV is called for is when it comes in direct contact with Electronics. Then you need the GE stuff
