View Full Version : HDDVD titles and Future Shop Canada
chillspace 03-13-08, 03:10 PM Well, it looks like Future Shop (Canada) has completely put HDDVD to an end. They don't seem to be receiving any of the new releases that are still slated for release from Universal and Warner. No copies of 'Fletch' (online or in-store) and 'Atonement' isn't even listed for pre-order and it's supposed to be released next week. Looks like my last bit of HDDVD shopping will be imported from the States.
Marc D Carra 03-13-08, 04:33 PM Yep, they have ceased to get new titles. Yet you can still get Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift for $47.99 if you hurry:

angelo913 03-13-08, 05:06 PM All my HD DVD purchases are online now as the local Canadian Retailer's selection of HDM was a joke from the start or 2 years ago.

chillspace 03-13-08, 05:14 PM Well, thankfully, I ordered 'Fletch' through Amazon.com (almost 50% off at that).
chaingunsofdoom 03-13-08, 05:20 PM Another possible sign they don't care anymore? I had to return Into the Wild due to a damaged case (the disk holder was destroyed). I grabbed one off the shelf and they didn't even run it through the system as an exchange. They didn't open it either like they're supposed to with an opened item.
They may not be getting any new titles in, but they have knocked down several titles to $19.99. Bourne Ultimatum is also finally not a ridiculous $39.99 anymore. I think it was down to $26.99, when I walked in last night.
No matter, as Amazon.com gets all my business, anyway.

So you'll pay less money and get better service. Not a problem from my point of view. ;)
Try Amazon.com - much lower prices than Amazon.ca, and they still ship from Canada, but not PST/GST.
chaingunsofdoom 03-15-08, 06:15 PM Just wanted to pop-in to say this is not happening @ all FS stores. I saw Michael Clayton and In The Valley of Elah at the closest FS today. Laughed @ the $32.99 price and then left. Still, it was cheaper than Best Buy where they wanted $34.99!
R Harkness 03-15-08, 07:01 PM I can't believe how media prices at Future Shop continue to suck so badly. Even today while I was there my kid begged me into buying 101 Dalmations on SD DVD: $28 friggin' dollars after tax, for SD!
And their HD DVDs still sell at top price.
Does no one at that store pay attention to the outside world?
chillspace 03-15-08, 07:43 PM Like I mentioned before, I've been expanding my HDDVD collection via Amazon.com and Deepdiscount.com. There have been a few titles that were actually cheaper to buy from Futureshop (FS) but those are few and far between.
Suffice it to say, I'm not buying new releases but a lot of the back catalogue from Paramount and Universal. Reason being is that I don't see these titles being released on Blu-ray in the short to medium term. Titles like 'Top Gun', 'The Warriors', 'Fletch', 'Out of Sight', 'The Thing', 'Serenity', etc. will be a long time coming, if at all. I expect Paramount and Universal to concentrate on new releases and catalogue items going back to perhaps 2005. That's just my take on it.

Futureshop? What about Best Buy? Their prices are always $4-$8 more than the same title at Futureshop. I went to Futureshop to pick up Independence Day on Blu-ray (yes I know this is the HD-DVD section) for $26.99. They didn't have it so I went down the street to Best Buy. They had it, but wanted $34.99 for it. Ridiculous.

The Warriors was released on Blu-ray before they declared sides, so I don't see why that one won't get a re-release.

Gentlemen! Unless instant gratification is in order and you can't wait the average 3 business days that it takes (which may be the case with a child), go to amazon.com! No tax and excellent customer service, as well as price-matching within 30 days, all by sending a simple e-mail or calling a 1-800 number.
-101 Dalmations (http://www.amazon.com/101-Dalmatians-Two-Disc-Platinum-Taylor/dp/B000YERP2S******sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1205702085&sr=1-1)

Even after adding shipping, you still win without the tax.

I wasn't implying that people were being uninformed that there are other sources to buy their HD movies. I was simply stating that Future Shop for all intents and purposes has COMPLETELY gone Blu...There are no new releases (it seems) to be slated for release either in physical stores or online. As mentioned above, Best Buy (Canada) has been consistently more expensive for their movies in both SD and HD so FS was one of the more affordable chains for HD movies in general...Don't forget, not everyone shops on Amazon and there are times when the shipping costs can push the price up to the retail price of some Canadian stores.

chillspace, my comments were pointed towards Rich and MaynardJames. I was referring to their picking up those movies at FS, as opposed to Amazon.
I recently ordered 15 discs from Amazon.com.
It cost about $230 or an average of $15 per disc.
It would have cost me close to $400 at Future Shop.
I finally just gave up on FS and BB.
My mother in visiting my sister in South Carolina. So I had them delivered there with free shipping and my mother will bring them back. Cool!
jedi.master.dre 04-08-08, 10:56 PM I got Atonement for $6.59 after they price matched HMV'd $8.99 and added the extra 10% of the difference from $32.99 off. I see that now Future Shops price dropped to $8 as well. Good luck finding any of their sale discs in stock anywhere though.
I went to FutureShop on Calgary Trail south in Edmonton this morning and, as I stood there, a sales person was in the act of changing prices on all their HD DVDs. Here are a few examples of the lowered price:
Forbidden Planet $12.99
Goodfellas $12.99
Blade Runner $17.99
Not too bad, considering what they used to be.

Wow! Thanks for that post.
I had been checking in daily to the online site and noticed a slow incremental drop in prices as well as the overall titles available (last week about 250, now around 160)
I had been buying up titles in the 18.99 range assuming that they would drop much further within 30 days and then go in to get credits and PICK UP MORE like the box sets for "free". Picked up a few at 7.99 also but dont think they can get anly lower than that! :)
I have NOT noticed the online prices get changed to what you have posted. I hope this is in fact going to be a nationwide change today???
The titles are decreasing rapidly and it probably looks like their intention is to CLEAN the shelves out by the end of the month.
Update: Just checked through all of the titles on my "wishlist" online and I do notice ONE price drop today......
Blade Runner is at $ 24.99 now ($34.99 yesterday). But your half off at $ 17.99 looks so much nicer! :)
Could tommorrow be a banner day for deals at Futureshop??
Some big price drops yesterday, and the stores seem to be all over the map.
The nearest BB had several $7.99 titles and some $12.99 titles yesterday. The nearest Future Shop had most titles at $12.99 today, to clear. The salesman said the reduction orders had just came down from head office. I went to two other Future Shops to see if I could find the last 3 HD DVD titles I want, and while they had lots of titles, no discounting had occured.
PooperScooper 04-10-08, 04:11 PM please continue in the deals sticky. thanks.
