Hi all-
Some of you may be aware of "cyTV", a free piece of software that allows you to stream TV - both recorded and LIVE - from a Mac running eyeTV with tuners attached.
cyTV has up to this point been comprised of a client program and a server program, and used VLC to show content. It hadn't been updated in years, and frankly was slow & very confusing.
I'm happy to let you all know that the developer of cyTV is back at work with a new version, in pre-release form - re-built from the ground up. All you have to do to run it is a) install a program on the "server" Mac, and then install the VLC web plug in on any client Mac, PC, or Linux box.
All control and display is done via a web browser - just enter in the URL for your server Mac, chose what you want to watch, and watch it. (You can still get full-screen video by double-clicking on the video content.)
Performance is far better than older versions - there is minimal lag when switching stations. Best of all, there is a new feature - controllable on the client web page - to transcode content on the fly to a lower bandwidth form.
With this new feature, I'm able to sit anywhere in the world, aim my browser at my home web server, and watch live TV (or recorded programs) streamed over the internet.
The site to learn about and play with this new version (0.7) of cyTV is:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/cytv/
Note: this is different from the "normal" home of cyTV. That site, containing the old version (0.6) is at:
http://www.lucid-cake.net/cytv/index_en.html
I hope this helps some of you out - being able to have a free Mac slingbox capability will probably come in handy with all the traveling that I do.
