I am looking at buying one of the following players. Either the -

Samsung 1080P7 $94.99

or

Toshiba HD-A35 $99.00 +2 Free Movies, 300 & Bourne Identity

I know the Toshiba HD format is over so I am really looking at these for the upconversion. I have a Samsung 61" TV Model HL-T6187S. Which player do you think I should get? Have any of you used either player? Or possibly both? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate the read Cavu. It was a very interesting article about different connections and resolutions and broadcasting signals.

Although, in the end I am left asking the same question. Which upconverting player is better? The Samsung or the Toshiba?

In the article it reads that -
The bottom line is that despite the best efforts of the marketing guys to pull a fast one here, many of the better up-scaling players DO INDEED produce a significantly better image on many HDTV-ready TVs. Some of that is due to the digital connection, but some is also due to the combination of de-interlacing and scaling technologies working well to produce a signal the TV happens to be optimized to display. Combine that with other improvements naturally occurring with each product cycle and you get a better player.

But just as with the progressive players, there are some up-scaling players out there which are nothing but hype. Engineered by the school of shoddy, they are just not worth the money. And there are undoubtedly folks who will buy up-scaling players and find they end up preferring the signal they get hooking the thing up via S-video at 480 resolution, simply because their TV does a better job doing what they paid to have the DVD player do.

So what is the popular opinion on these two players? They are both in my price range and are what I am looking at to get me through until I buy a Blu Ray player. Since I currently have around 150 DVD's and I've seen the difference a good upconverting player can make I would like to know which one of these I should consider to replace my previous player that is now dead. Or should I say which one of these is not engineered by the school of shoddy and can produce a good image.

I think the Toshiba has the better overall rep for upscaling, and the added advantage of playing the soon to be scarce HD-DVD if you ever come across one.

The big problem is that different equipment combinations (players and displays) can produce different results, and everyone's opinions are subjective. In either player's case, a good return policy from the store will allow you to view both and make an informed decision.

Well I stopped by Circuit City by my house because that’s where I originally saw the two players and was trying to decide. I had made up my mind after reading several things to go ahead and pick up the A35 and go with it.

So I picked up the box and took it to the front to check out. The guy scanned it and told me the total was $249.00. So I proceeded to tell him that the shelf had it marked for $99 dollars. He went and looked and it turns out the player was miss marked. That the 99 dollars was for the A3 not the A35... so needless to say I didn't get it.

Well an update on this issue. I decided to go with a Toshiba HD-A30 that I found at Best Buy for $99.99 new with 2 HD DVD's 300 & Bourne Identity.

I bought it last night and hooked it up so I really haven't had time to mess with the unit. So if anyone has an opinion I would be willing to hear it. I chose the Toshiba over the Samsung at the same price point.

Thanks.
