Im not sure I can wrap my mind around your question. The TV he had vs the Visio are no different in terms of what basic cable channels they can see. Are you under the impression that they are different and the Visio cannot see analog cable? If so, then yes, it can see all the same channels your fathers old tv could. The only difference is it has a quam tuner to see available digital channels in addition to the analog.

What I'm trying to say is once Comcast goes Digital will the TV still work with basic cable or does he need to get a set top box.
thanks

It will likely still work. The all digital conversion only applies to over the air broadcasts. Cable companies can continue to insert analog in their system to their harts content. Cox stated in an article yesterday that they vowe keep analog for at least 3 years so as not to alienate those subscribers.

Even so, your dad now has a digital TV whatever they choose to do, hes covered.

After the cable company goes digital only, this tv will receive the channels on the limited basic tier. Most likely they will scramble the channels in expanded basic, so then the choice will be either get a converter box or live without ESPN, USA, CNN, etc.
