I haven't been here in a long while, sorry!

I have a Sony 40XBR1, which I love. I use an old Sony DVD player (425P), and have been thinking that an upconverting DVD player would make a lot of sense. I recently downloaded a Grateful Dead DVD from 1981, which apparently was recorded in PAL, and it will play on my Mac, but not on my Sony DVD player. I thought I could kill two birds with one stone if I got an upconverting DVD player that also could play PAL encoded DVDs. Is there one that would fit the bill? I hate to say it, but I don't really want to spend a lot of money on the DVD player, since technology changes so fast. I did spend plenty on the tv and have never regretted it for a second. But DVD players come and go, to some extent. Any quick recommendations? Or is there a thread you can point me to? I didn't see anyone with exactly the scenario I was outlining, but perhaps I missed it. Thanks alot for any help or suggestions you can offer.

Price range? The Oppos all play PAL and do PAL->NTSC conversion, but start with the 980 at $169.

If you search this forum for threads with PAL in the title, you will find other recommendations: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/search.php?searchid=9523724

Thanks. I'd prefer to buy a $100 player, but $180 doesn't sound too bad if it will really look better, be able to handle my next tv whenever (1080p), and can also play PAL encoded discs.

Philips DVP5982/37 will do the job for $75 or less (BB puts it on sale periodically). 1080p upconversion, plays PAL & NTSC out of the box, region free with a few clicks of the remote. My display is only 720p but I noticed a definite improvement in PQ over my older progressive scan player via component.
