Anyone able to recommend a decent 6k to 10k BTU window unit that is quiet?

Check out a Mitsubishi split ductless system. If you have an entertainment room - these are silent.

Otherwise for a crappy window unit, theres no such thing as quiet, only less and more noisy. I have had good luck with sears digital window ac's - but I usually get a new one every couple years as they seem to get louder and louder. The Mitsubishi units are really really really good.

I thought about those (mits) and may have to save up. I dont mind a bit of noise since its a Media/game room but just did not want it to loud.

Also smaller is quieter - a smaller one that runs more constantly much better than a big one that cycles...

The Mits and /or Sanyo units maybe a little too much for what you trying to do. These units ( I have 2) are a handful to install not to mention that the condesor needs to be remotely installed. Interstingly, I had a similar situation with a customer whose tennant space was on the third floor. Mounting a condensor on the roof or on ground level was not in the cards. My solutionn was to buy a spot cooler with automatic condesate pump. You absolutely need a drain to hook up one of these devices or have your plumber install one if need be. They (spot cooler) are whisper quite, temperature controllable and if remember correctly at least 1/2 of there ductless bretherens. This, hands down, will beat out a window a/c unit for aestetics and sound- good luck...

Went this a GE 12K BTU using. It is a bit big for what I want but the room I will be using it in get very hot during the La Summers. Said its quiet in its operation.
