View Full Version : Are There BIG Changes for Cartoons in HD?
sweetmisery 03-14-08, 03:18 PM Cuz I always plan on getting Simpsons Movie; as well as the Justice League Frontier. But some say its not worth getting it in HD, cuz cartoons dont really have a big change worth getting.
Just wondering...
THANKS!
I've seen some folks post that animation gets a big boost from HD, but I don't see how! I might be able to buy it with a CG movie like Final Fantasy, but regular animation doesn't seem like it would matter.
GamerGuyX 03-14-08, 04:49 PM Yes, it matters a great deal. All content benefits from high-def as long as the source has a resolution high enough.
dajuice 03-14-08, 05:02 PM I would think if the source is proper, clean hi-def, the difference in sharpness compared to SD would be even more pronounced than with film material.
WirelessGuru 03-14-08, 05:12 PM When I first heard that Microsoft was offering an HD episode of South Park in HD I was very skeptical. How the heck does HD make crappy animation like South Park look better? Seemed like a waste.
Then I saw the episode and I was acually very surprised and impressed. 16 x 9 aspect ratio added a lot, the colors were greatly enhanced, and the picture just looked much cleaner and appealing to the eye. So while I originally thought animation in HD seemed like a big joke. I have to admit that HD does have a lot to offer in the way of enhancement. I say go ahead and get them. If you appreciate watching regular films in HD over SD and see value, I think animation in HD carries the same increase in value.
grommet 03-14-08, 05:14 PM Even on animated titles with less than impressive detail, there will be benefit simply because of less compression artifacts... and the wider color space doesn't hurt, either. And, of course, the improved audio potential is there.
For example, Disney's classic Jungle Book may still look better in high-def... but it won't have the gain a much more detailed title like Sleeping Beauty will realize.
Yes, it matters a great deal. If you have Comcast's HD OnDemand you can see the difference for yourself. Right now they are offering some anime (Japanese style animation) in HD under Cutting Edge/IFC/Anime. Check out Samurai 7- absolutely stunning.
You can also check out other animation in HD OnDemand from Nickelodeon- popular series such as Sponge Bob and Avatar: The Last Airbender can be found there.
I have many 2D animated movies on SD DVD that are clearly hindered by SD DVD.
Backgrounds - Backgrounds are hand-painted or CG, and can have far more detail than SD DVD is capable of representing (notable example: The Place Promised in Our Early Days).
Color Space - Animation can include colors that are more brilliant and vivid than live action film, but the colors on SD DVD are either clipped or compressed to be "NTSC-safe" and can appear duller than intended (notable example: Steamboy).
Compression - Sharp lines and edges require higher bitrates than live action film to encode, and are often surrounded by very visible artifacts on SD DVD (notable example: Princess Mononoke).
Hand-Drawn/Painted Feel - Just like some people like to see film grain on live action movies, the details of the pencil lines and brush strokes gives older animation a warm feeling but are often lost on SD DVD (notable example: Fantasia).
2D animation has progressed a lot since Disney stopped making 2D movies in favor of 3D. The dynamic lighting, environment effects, and background detail in modern Anime movies like Byousoku 5cm makes Lion King look like made-for-television animation! Watch the "Dream CG World" featurette on the Paprika Blu-Ray, it discusses some of the lighting and environment effects, like the way rain drops hit the pavement, that really need HD resolution.
AlexanderG 03-14-08, 08:47 PM Well, let's just put it this way...
The Simpsons Movie is probably the most impressive Blu Ray I own, according to my group of friends that watch most new Blu Rays I purchase...
Cartoons look smashing in HD... That's all there really is to it. :)
ragar01 03-14-08, 09:50 PM If you want to se what classic Warners Cartoons look like in HD look no further than the HD DVD release of The Adventures of Robin Hood which features 3 WB cartoons. They look stunning. I have Justice League Blu Ray disc and have rented The Simpsons what the earlier posters said is true worth getting. Hey Warners can we get the Looney Tunes sets in HD please?

or 8 Ball Bunny, included on March of the Penguins and found in the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, Vol. 4.

From your lips to God's ear.
shadowrage 03-14-08, 11:40 PM OP who ever told you animation doesn't benfit from HD either has a bad set up or bad eyes. It's the only way 2D sources start took look 3D.
Animation probably benefits the most from HD. Everything is clean and sharp and looks like a surreal painting moving in front of you eyes. JL is now my go to disc for colors(until Speed Races comes out). They will seriously freak you out.
Even my southpark HD-DVD looks good. The Simpsons is definently one of the best looking BDs ever.
Once you seen animation in HD on a properly calibrated display you will bitch and moan about how Japan gets HD anime and we dont. Seriously If you doubt that animation doesn't look better in HD, take a look at one of the discs and I mean any one, because they all look fantastic.

That's the problem, I think... You don't "see" how it would make a difference, it doesn't "seem" like it would, etc.
Bottom line is you need to actually see it with your own eyes before saying it doesn't make a difference. I saw the difference instantly when I downloaded a 720p trailer for the Simpsons film on my Xbox. It looks even better on full-bore Blu-ray.
That's not aimed directly at you, Bugg77, it's just I see this sort of thing all the time on any number of boards. People who claim that animation doesn't benefit from high-definition, yet who have never actually witnessed it themselves.
Granted, it's not some life-changing event, but there's definitely a noticeable improvement, especially in scenes where there's a lot going on.
sweetmisery 03-15-08, 12:58 AM OK THANKS GUYS! Appreciate it as usual!
tw1zt3d 03-15-08, 10:08 AM search for the transformers (original animated movie from the 80s) thread in this area... someone posted screen caps that shows how much cleaner it looks on bd...
BerserkerTails 03-15-08, 05:13 PM Just watched Enchanted on BD two nights ago. The animation sections looked phenomenal, but what was even more interesting was the 1080p trailer for Sleeping Beauty on the disc. The quality was amazing, though I can see a lot of people complaining about it because it's very grainy due to the nature of cel-based animation.
MovieSwede 03-15-08, 05:17 PM Well SD has luma of 720*480 and chroma of 360*240
So every source that has something over this, will benefit from HD.
Also everything benefits from the better compression that HD has over DVD.

I'll be picking that one up soon, childhood favorite, can't wait.
tcwatkins 03-17-08, 02:26 PM Ratatouille is staggering on Blu-ray. Both the video and the audio. The sewer trip has to be seen and heard to be believed.
SoundGizzard 03-17-08, 02:59 PM Ultimate Avengers looks incredible to me. granted, I'm usually more about the AQ, the PQ looks great.
The colors are brilliant.
