I recently followed the "DCT64xx Firewire capture and HD/SD to DVD guide" to attempt to copy programs/DVR material from my Motorola 6416 DVR connected to Insight cable TV onto my Windows XP Professional SP2 computer with a firewire connection to the port closest to the power cable of the DCT6416. My DCT6416 diagnostics shows 1394 device is "Enabled" (Yes) but "Active" is (No). When I look at the 1394 device settings, Active ports = 1 and 5C Implementation = NO and it shows "COPY FREE". When I run CAPDVHS, select the Motorola capture device, with settings to "Convert 188 bytes", "Check PTS", and "Delete to SyncByte" selected and all file extensions as .ts, and then try to record a 1 minute clip, none of the clip information shows in the data window but something is recorded in the test.ts file for a period of one minute before stopping. When I try to open the test.ts file in Media Player Classic, I get the error message that the file "cannot be rendered". I get the same message when I try to convert the .ts file using either HDTVtoMPEG2 or HDTV2DVD. Can anyone help me record this information? Thank you.

I found this DOES work with Analog channels but with only 3 out of 21 digital/HD channels I tried. Even CAPDVHS does not seem to recognize the format of the stream on nonworking channels since it does not show stream characteristics in the Data info tab while capturing. Is there a way to capture these other digital/HD streams? Thanks.

Despite what your 5C/whatever flags say, non-recognizable TS from capdvhs = signal is copy protected

If there is no clip information like resolution or bit rate while you are recording, then it is encrypted and the data recoreded can not be processed or played. Try different channels until you get clip info when recording then you will have a non-encrypted recording.
