View Full Version : Anime on Blu-ray .VS. DVD
I am just wondering if there is a huge picture difference for anime on Blu-ray.Does it look that much better to justify the $10 more over a DVD?I really want to get the new Appleseed movie, and Paprika.Any info would be great, thanks.
Ozymandis 03-15-08, 04:36 AM IMO 2d animation can blow you away in high-def as much as any live action stuff. It's sooo much cleaner, and more stable. But you get to see more source artifacts.
Hopefully now that BR is the only high-def format we'll see more releases.
SneakerPimp 03-15-08, 06:08 AM Well, it's not on Blu-ray but here's a screen comparison between the Freedom SD and HD version.

I only own Paprika and Tekkonkinkreet on Blu-ray but the picture difference on a big screen is just amazing. Tekkonkinkreet just looks great while Paprika's image is a bit softer. So I'd say it's worth the $10, if the show/film was created in HD and is not just a upscaled version.
Incidentally Paprika and Appleseed are two of the softest transfers when it comes to anime. There's certainly no reason to buy the DVD, but the difference is not exactly breathtaking on Appleseed and Paprika is mostly better due to the fact that the DVD has tons of EE, instead of the BD being sharper and more detailed.
Some of the biggest improvements so far can be seen in the older, film-based movies like Patlabor and Jin-Roh (of course these cost a fortune thanks to crazy Japanese prices.)

And to directly answer the OP's question, let me put it this way - I have a greater desire to re-buy my animated DVDs on Blu-Ray, than to re-buy any live-action movies.
Jason Priestley 03-15-08, 11:39 AM Tekkonkinkreet looks amazing on blu-ray. While not anime I bought the Justice League: New Frontiers movie...the reviews suggest that it its a substantial upgrade...but I was not overwhelmed at all. Perhaps because the animation was intentionally so simple.
Mamasboy 03-15-08, 11:57 AM With cartoons, I haven't seen much reason to go blu-ray if you can save money on the dvd version. I have seen cartoons in both formats and they certainly don't have the wow factor that live action has on blu-ray.

Do not listen to this guy, at least before seeing the difference for yourself. I think the difference is huge. I'm never going back to SD.

Me neither. But I noticed some people will flame you for that for being arrogant. lol

I'll voice a polite disagreement with this statement. For my experience, it's exactly the same payoff as live action. (I.E. If the master looks great, the HD version stomps the SD version.)

+1
Everything benefits from a high-def transfer as long as the source is not recorded in something like 480i video.
this thread will better answer OPs specific question:
