View Full Version : Who do you hire to fish cables?

Yes, I know I could probably do it myself (I am handy, have done electrical work and minor drywall patching, etc), but I just really do not have the time. I also don't know the exact construction of my house (which way the ceiling joists go, etc) which could make for a lot of exploratory holes that I then have to patch. The house is on a slab, no attic above the room that is being wired, no continuous floorboard to attempt to hide behind. I would like to hire someone that will fish wire I provide to wire up two surround speakers in the living room and two speakers and a volume control for a Zone 2 in the kitchen. I would also like to throw in some coax to two spots for possible sub locations (one in the front, one in the rear hidden behind the couch, not sure which one will work best for my layout/aesthetics).

But who do I hire? A general handyman, an electrician, a home theatre installer???? I will provide all the cable (CL2/CL3 rated of course), and I don't need anything terminated/hooked up. I would be happy if when it is done, there are just wires sticking out of the wall and ceiling. Has anyone done this, who did you hire?

Thanks for any advice.

The issue is going to be based on your criteria that some sheetrock patching and spackling will need to be done. IMO I would hire either the electrician as they have done this more times than most other trades or an HT installer and finally do the patching yourself if you have the time.

Also note that most electricians do NOT fix drywall after they are done.

I take it that most HT installers, who would do the fishing and patching, tend not to want to use customer supplied materials? I suppose I could hire two people, one to fish, and someone cheap to patch up the walls afterwards.
