View Full Version : TrueHD screwy in HTPC movies?

Hi all,
got a question. I've searched the forums, but either I am using the wrong keywords or I just don't see it.

I'm trying to find out why my TrueHD sound is screwy. I'm playing movies (both HD DVD and BluRau) on my HTPC that has audio output to my Onyko 705 via TOSlink. The movies are remuxed onto my HDD with just the movie/soundtrack due to the fact that my wife cannot handle the disks to/from the player, or the remote, due to an injury/handicap. The sound is there, only the main sound is from the rear surround speakers and not the frond ones. The center channel seems ok too. If I rip with just the AC3 track all is well. Showtime shows TrueHD while playing, and there is sound from all speakers, just not correctly played.

I'm using a LG dual format player, AnyDVD HD, Auzen X-Plosion 7.1 DTS via TOSlink, SPDIFer, 8600GT into my Onkyo 705. Movie is played on Nero Showtime- all in WinXP Media Center 2005

Is there a way to fix this? a setting somewhere I missed? or is the TrueHD not yet perfected and I need to just stick with AC3? Not sure if TrueHD is neeed, but if its there... migth as well use it, right?

I don't know what model LG you are using, but if it is the BH200, Sound & Vision's review stated there were problems with TrueHD. Only two channels.

Perhaps a future firmware update will fix it.

I'm not 100% familiar with the equipment you're talking about but TrueHD can't be sent via Toslink, or anything other than HDMI or analog outputs-- there isn't enough bandwidth to do so. So that may be the issue you're running into. Does it work correctly if you select the Dolby Digital or (plain) DTS track(s)? (not DTS HD stuff)

surprised you get any sound at all. you can't send TrueHD over toslink. impossible no matter what equipment you have. it can't handle more than 2 hidef audio channel's worth of bandwidth.
you're gonna need to send it over analog.

huh... that sucks!

the LG i have is just the player - not burner. And I do get sound over it, thru all speakers. only like i mentioned, the main (loudest) sound is over the rear surround speakers. Even more curious is that the sound is correct - not like the rear and front channels are swapped. the sound follows the screen movement correctly.

now, do I want to tear apart my entertainment center to swap the cables around? hmmm... have to think if it's worth it. it'll be a real pain as everything is very tight, cable-tied togethers and routed thru openings.

Dammit...

You must have the amp in some sort of "enhanced"/matrixed surround mode. And/or your computer is doing some encoding (transcoding) to Dolby Digital or DTS so you get a signal that way. Either way, you're not really getting TrueHD-- you're getting something else. Not sure what-- that depends on your hardware-- but you can't get TrueHD through an optical cable.

correct from above..

biggest down fall (as of now) no lossless audio from htpc...they are in works now to fix/update to handle this.

I also have an X-Plosion, and on occasion play movies from my HTPC.

For everyone saying because of the content encoding engine (be it DTS or DD) you won't get TrueHD. Partially true, HD can't come over optical -- too much bandwidth. Also, if you pass true DTS or DD content, while the content encoder is on one of two things happens:

- DTS is on, you're playing DD. DD track is up sampled to 1.5Mbps over DTS. True Surround? Yes.

- DD is on, you're playing DTS. DTS track is down sampled to 640Kbps over DD. True Surround? Yes, but not original.

well you can get lossless 16bit/48Hz from PowerDVD over analog out.
sort of.
no DTS-MA, only LCPM and TrueHD seem to work, and there is some question that TrueHD is actually playing DD+ due to a bug in the last few releases of PowerDVD but that is not proven)

supposedly the other, somewhat buggier at this stage, softwares handle 24bit and 96Hz in addition to just 16bit/48Khz lossless.
