View Full Version : Pans Labyrinth, no 7.1 on the movie?

I'm using a PS3 with the Blu-ray version of Pan's Labyrinth with an HK AVR 247 receiver. I just hooked up two extra speakers to serve as the side surrounds. However, when I play the movie, only the intro New Line Cinema animation registers as 7.1 on my receiver; the rest of the movie is 5.1, it seems. I know this is a widespread problem, and I did some searching, but I couldn't find anything of use.

Has there been a solution for this problem? Surely it can't be hardware related, since the intro animation registered as 7.1. As far as I know, the 247 cannot be firmware upgraded. Any help?

I also tried going into the OSD and forcing Logic 7ch Cinema, but to no avail; it went to 5.1 DTS as soon as I pressed 'Play'. I also made sure that in the PS3 settings, that the audio outputs for 7.1 were checked - they were. It's most likely a software problem, or a problem on the disc. Either way, I hope I can get this fixed; this disc is the only 7.1 disc I have, and without it, I cannot test my 7.1 system.

I just checked it out on my Panasonic BD30 and Onkyo 805 and the DTS-MA audio track lights up all 7.1 speakers in my receiver throughout the first 10 minutes of the movie (which is where I turned it off).

Maybe the fact that PS3 doesn't output DTS-MA is affecting the 7.1 output somehow???

Well, if it's outputting at the intro animation, then it must be able to output it as 7.1. Besides, the PS3 can output DTS-MA, it just can't internally decode it - the PS3 leaves that to the receiver.

I have no idea why the intro registers as 7.1 (bad flag, encoded as DD+ 7.1, etc.?!?), but "playing" a DTS-HD MA 7.1 track on the PS3 yields DTS 5.1, thus the 5.1 showing up on the AVR.

Darn! I guess I'll have to wait another month until I can get a BD50 until I can watch 7.1 discs :(

There is no such thing as DTS 7.1. It has to be DTS HD or MA. If you're getting the 1.5mbps lossy track, the most it can do is 6.1.

I'm guessing that you guys only visit the forum on very rare occasions. There was a recent long running thread on this very issue, including the reasons, the receivers affected, etc. If you'd search for it and read it, you'd find that you've already come to some erroneous conclusions and false observations, that may cause some chargrin. No sense repeating what was already said. Do a search for 7.1 in the thread title. Or look for a thread on Pan ... That should do in.

Yes, Master Audio is what I meant, I thought that was implied.

Yes, basically here is the deal:

- The PS3 cannot bitstream advanced audio (TrueHD, DTS:MA, etc.) So you are limited there for this.

- It is mainly an issue with New Line released, Hairspray did this as well. The DTS:MA 7.1 track was indeed being sent (on a capable player like my Panasonic BD30) as DTS:MA 7.1 to my Denon, but the Denon was reading it as 5.1. Indeed the sound coming out of my speakers was DTS:MA 7.1, but the screen on my Denon was saying 5.1, so it bothered me.

- Some receiver have this problem, they will read certain New Line releases that are 7.1 and think they are 5.1, they will play the 7.1 but only "show" 5.1

- I don't know about other companies, but Denon had a firmware issue like a month ago to fix this. So now it reads properly.

So if you are using a PS3 then you cannot even decode the DTS:MA track fully. Only extract the 1.5 core.

But basically its a problem with the receivers taking in 7.1 but telling you its 5.1, even though its playing the 7.1
