...to get the full audio benefits of this player?
I have on order an Onkyo SR800 (only HDMI video pass-through) HTiB and a Samsung LNT4065F HD TV. I need an upconverting DVD player and am primarily interested in the quality of my concert DVD's and the occasional movie. I'm also considering the Toshiba HD-A3 for half the price and would only use it for std. DVDs.

You could use the 7.1ch analog outputs,HDMI is more useful for upconverting video on encrypted DVD's.
The A3 only has Toslink and 2ch analog.

The Toshiba does not have 7.1 outputs. You'd have to go with the A35. The A3 will only give you digital outs (toslink and coax) and stereo analog. If you want HDMI audio you'd have to get a receiver that that processes audio. I think you can get one for around $350 if you wait until April. Pioneer and Sony are both coming out with receivers that will do that. Then you'd have to add speakers. I don't know what your budget is.
Besides, any standard DVD is only recorded with compressed audio. The only thing you would be gaining is the convenience of one cable. BTW, if you only have one HDMI device, you might want to consider running it straight to the TV, it will save you the price of a cable.
p.s. try monoprice.com for very reasonable and decent quality cables.

I have a similar question regarding audio to a receiver that doesn't have HDMI inputs: can I send the audio from the Oppo using the coaxial digital audio out simultaneously to the video going out over the HDMI to the TV?
I understand that I can use the 7.1 analog outs, but I have never used a coaxial digital connection before. But my receiver has that input, and I'd much rather pay for 1 digital cable than the pricey 8-cable bundle for the 7.1 analogs. Seems like it should work but I guess I don't fully understand the whole HDMI 'handshake' thing, and was just concerned that maybe HDMI wouldn't allow for a seperated digital audio output..?

Mine ran just fine that way until I got an HDMI pre/pro.
