View Full Version : Celine Dion: 1080i?.. and some audio issues
thebland 03-16-08, 01:12 PM My Sony player shows this disc to be 1080i, not 1080P24. Every other BD disc I put in shows 1080P24 as native, like I'd expect. The menu at start up comes up as 1080P24 but hit play and down to 1080i..
Anyone else notice this..?
Also, on this disc my Sony S500 cannot output a full PCM track when TRUE HD is chosen only on this disc. I have the latest firmware. My processor will not matrix up to 7 channels. I may only be getting 3 or 5 channels (didn't really check). No audio problems with any other BD disc I put in the Sony. However, when I put the disc in my Panny, no problem with the audio.
What's going on here?
William 03-16-08, 01:19 PM Must be shot on HD video and not film or HD video's rarely used 24fps format. Please say you are playing for the wife and/or kids.
Joe Bloggs 03-16-08, 03:35 PM I don't have it, but other posters have mentioned that it is 1080i60. And for concerts, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Does the motion in the picture look good/live or does it show too many interlacing artefacts? For concerts I don't see a need for 1080p24.
PS: How possible would 1080p30 be on Blu-ray for titles like this? I don't think 1080p30 is an actual Blu-ray res/rate but 1080i60 is, but if it was recorded in camera at 1080p30 would it look better than ecording it in camera at 1080i60, and would you be able to flag it so it looked exactly like 1080p30?

Isn't that what the NiN BD does?
HD-DVD does 1080p/30. I guess you could compare the NiN discs to find out.

The NIN BD is encoded at 1080p30 but has 1080i60 flags. This will be the same for other titles that are shot at 1080p30. Really, there would be no difference as the native material is still progressive.

What's going on here?I use a PS3 and a Pioneer elite 92txh receiver and get TrueHD 5.1 that I matrix with PLIIx to get 7.1 with this disk. How is the Sony and receiver or pre amp setup?
thebland 03-17-08, 03:02 PM Hmm.. It must be my disc or the way my Sony is sending out the PCM track... Strange...... My Panny BD-10 sends out the proper LPCM signal to my pre/pro. The Sony does not. This may have happened after the most recent SONY firwmare update as I could have sworn it was fine before then.....
indigo80 03-29-08, 04:18 PM Would it be possible for the ps3 2.2 update to 'break' the audio? My wife had it on last weekend after watching titanic, and just now showing the parents the show and the top notes all the way through are very distorted, especially on the titanic song.
the only thing thats changed in a week is the update, any ideas?
--edit--
after further investigation it seems to be something to do with the pcm audio, as the dolby truehd doesnt suffer the same effect and unless something has changed (with the 2.2 update) which is chosen as the default audio something is wrong

I think Shakira does the same thing. I'm not positive.
yes its 1080i and 60hz. what else would you want? 24hz is for film. its amazing to say the least. i have never seen the AUDIO bit rate of any other BD go as high as 9.5 Mbps, pretty amazing. Think of it, the audio track alone contains more data than any DVD's combined data for audio + video.
ill check my version for the audio distortion mentioned as I have 2.2 fw.

Yes. I was just looking at this today (testing sound). The audio bit-rate was extremely high for the Dolby TrueHD track. I had to double check it a few times, but then I noticed it was 96khz.

96 kHz, eh?
This might explain why my Halcro SSP may not be matrixing this disc to 7.1 from the 5.1 soundtrack when using my Denon or Sony BD player but does so with my Panny BD player.
If this disc is 96 kHz, it is outputting 96 kHz to my SSP.. I do not think my Halcro SSP can do this with THX Ultra II @ 96 kHz but can at 48 kHz. I would guess this means the reason why I can get 5.1 --> 7.1 with my Panny BD player is that it down res's things from 96 kHz to 48 kHz in the player and then outputs the 5.1 track at 48 kHz.... a frequency my SSP does fine with.

Wow... interesting that it will down-rez. I really want to get a stand-alone blu-ray player, but the PS3 is just so good that, as ugly as it is, and as hot as it gets, I can't seem to find something better with as many features. I guess I will wait for 2.0 players that can actually bitstream of all of the lossless types... I guess they are coming soon...

It is the first gen Panny (BD-10) that I suspect is down resing. I beleive the Toshiba's do this as well (XA2). The Sony 550 and Denons are NOT down resing.

The concert is probably 30fps like most concerts. At 30fps you can only encode in 1080i according to Blu-ray spec, not 1080p.
