A New Look
While Philips has long been recognized for its sleek design, this new design collection truly stands out as something different in the marketplace. Philips conducted extensive research with consumers to find out what they really wanted. The response was that consumers feel that most televisions look the same and they miss products that are "outstanding." Consumers share a desire for products with a simpler and more approachable, softer and more sophisticated design.
"The introduction of our premier FlatTV line will strengthen our offerings in the fast-growing, large-screen HDTV market," said Stewart Muller, president of Philips Consumer Electronics, North America. "Starting from the first glance, these sets will stand apart from everything on the market due to their striking design and uniquely curved bezel. Consumers can look forward to an unparalleled viewing experience thanks to the unique combination of exceptional picture quality and design at an attractive price level."
The new design collection delivers on that need with a design that is minimalist, emotional, and recognizable and led by the 7000 series. Consumers will also notice the absence of a speaker grill, which makes the sleek, black bezel continuous around the set for a more minimalist look. The sound is actually powered from the back and carried out throughout the acrylic flare around the set - enveloping consumers in deep, rich sound. The end result is a TV that actually is part of your environment - superior performance packed in a design that is truly like no other.
Deeper Blacks, Sharper Movements
The addition of 120Hz ClearLCD™ technology improves the shadow detail and black levels in dark scenes while greatly diminishing motion artifacts. Philips' 120Hz ClearLCD technology provides razor-sharp moving images with an ultra-fast motion response time of two milliseconds. By doubling the picture refresh rate from the standard 60Hz, these sets deliver swift, streak-free action - elevating image quality and clarity.
Smoother Images
Philips has further refined the LCD with HD Digital Natural Motion™ technology (HD DNM), which eliminates the persistent juddering effects that appear with recorded movie content. Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC) technology estimates motion in the picture and inserts compensated frames, resulting in a smoother, more natural picture and eye-popping sharpness. By smoothing the shaky visuals typically appearing in film content, this technology creates an unrivaled experience.
More Immersive
Combined with amazing picture performance, Philips' latest generation of LED Ambilight™ technology immerses and engages viewers like no other display. The advanced lighting feature - available on the 7603 series - captures the colors and action on the screen and provides well-balanced light behind the TV set. This leads to more relaxed viewing and eliminates the need for additional ambient lighting while watching television.
Incredible Sound
The new 7000 series features a unique invisible speaker system that delivers a powerful audio experience from a slim TV cabinet. Philips' Invisible Sound System™ integrates a wOOx™ subwoofer - available on the 7603 series - with two dual-excursion passive radiator drivers to improve low frequency performance while concealing the speakers in a subtle, efficient design.
Clearer Choices
Calibrating picture settings is a breeze with Philips' simple, unique settings assistant feature. In a few easy steps, users can select their on-screen preferences with the left and right cursor buttons. By using a program similar to an eye test, viewers can select what they perceive as the best picture and sound. Choose initial preferences from the five split-screen samples and the television will make the changes and store them for future use.
Greater Connection
Forget compromised picture and sound quality caused by digital-to-analog conversions. The 7000 series offers four HDMI 1.3a inputs with built-in consumer electronics control (CEC) for the cleanest, clearest digital signal. Now users can hook-up as many as four HDMI devices while assured their sets are future-proof for further connectivity.
HD
Recent research by the CEA estimates that approximately 30 percent of households have a TV set capable of displaying images at an HD resolution. The study also suggests that first-time purchasers will lead the charge in buying millions of HDTVs in the coming months. Philips meets this high demand for digital content with televisions designed completely with the end user in mind - simplicity, sophistication and style in a bold, future-proof package.

Have you actually seen one in a store?
You can get one from the Best Buy Warehouse. They should be in most stores by the end of March early April.

studeman 04-05-08, 09:11 AM Hi - has anyone seen any of the new Philips 2ms response TVs anywhere? Dying to get my hands on a 52PFL7403. Can't seem to find anywhere to buy one.
Circuit City has the 18 months no payments and no interest deal going right now. I sure hope this tv shows up before the offer ends. Does anyone own this set yet? Also what's up with Amazon selling it for over $200 more than brightandsleek.com
PhilipsPhanatic 04-09-08, 01:27 PM With Philips disconinuing U.S./North American sales, I wonder what this means going forward. Yeah, the name will exist for a few more years -- but you have to wonder about the features and technology.
Ironically, just as their sets were getting rave reviews and the technological features appealing to pros and average consumers alike, they sever the cord. Figures.

Same here but the 52" isn't suppose to drop until May. The 47" said April and it's still not for sale anywhere, heck you can't even find a 42" other then a back room of Aaron's.

My local Costco had the 42TA648BX (http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_42TA648BX_37_US_CONSUMER/Flat-TV+42TA648BX-37) (5000 series less Pixel Plus 3 HD) last week-end. They were sold out tonight. The new cabinet looks very stylish.
The 47PFL5603D is in stock at Amazon.
the 7400 series are in stock at blightandsleek.com (including the 52")
has anyone dealt with these guys before? they seem to have the best prices right now.
i'd love to get the 52pfl7603D with the ambilight. can you say pimp?!
J-e-L-L-o 04-18-08, 04:45 AM Well did some research and ordered the phillips 42in a week ago before I joined the forum. Got it for $1299 on sale w/ the military exchange (store). I think im making a good, if not great decision...as I see a lot of anticipation for the philips line.
My first HDTV, and can't wait. Hopefully my set will arrive before GTAIV on PS3!
Higuchem 04-20-08, 02:01 AM Where in the manual can you fine that these TV's have 120hz? I am looking at 42ta648bx/27 and 42TA648BX/37
I am stuck between the two and not sure which one to get.
Im on the same boat, cant find these sets anywhere. Only place was Sams club with the 42in 7400. I want either a 47in or 52in 7600 with ambilight.

The TA648BX is not 120Hz. Only the 7403 and 7603 are 120Hz.

Thanks drivendriver, I got confused for the local Target had the 42pfl3603d/27 as 120hz.
If anyone could answer this I would appreciate it; Which one out of the two would you chose since both are very similar but the 42ta648bx/37 has a light sensor and two extra spkeakers. While 42pfl3603d/27 has Pixel Plus HD. Neither has both and stuck on which one.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
bradleyt 04-21-08, 01:07 PM Higuchem, the 42PFL7403 model selling at Sam's Club has everything you've been asking about for under $1,200: 120hz, PixelPlus HD, Light sensor, & 4 speakers at 30 Watts. Are the ones you're looking at selling for much less?
http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=393519&pCatg=5883
I bought one this weekend, but have been unhappy with the jerkiness of the set, more so in SD & regular DVD than HD, compared to my older Philips LCD -- Hopefully it's fixable with adjustments or firmware updates.
Also, there's another discussion board on this site with a lot more info on this upper model:

We probably should be posting more in here since this is the owners thread. :)
Higuchem 04-22-08, 12:46 PM Thanks Bradleyt for the info I was not able to fine the TV for cheaper anywhere else then Sam's Club where I got mine at. Also thanks for the link to the other threads.
Sad to say my 42PFL7403D/27 will have to stay in the box until I move to my new home before I get to try it out and give my opinion in June.
armartin812 04-23-08, 02:52 PM Has anyone gotten any gotten any experience with the 3603 model yet. I saw this at my Target and I'm leaning towards getting this one as it's in the price range that I want to spend. I'm not too worried about the SD channels as I very rarely get to watch TV anymore. I wanted to know if anyone has seen their Xbox360 or PS3 on this TV and how they look along with Blu-Rays. Thanks.

I own the Philips 42PFL3603D/27
Our needs seem to be very similar in this situation. All I was / am really concerned about is the picture quality of ps3, blue-ray, and HD stations. I do not watch much television and when I do it is generally only HD.
I also saw this television at Target and after reading some reviews decided with both my limited budget and demands, it would be a great fit.
So far it has been great. Blue-ray looks very very good and PS3 looks equally as good. HD stations look crisp and clear. So far I have no complaints with its ability to display high definition content.
The setup is a bit tricky and it takes some time to get things just right. In my case it was about a day. Some of the features that they offer seem to negatively effect the picture quality, such as the dynamic contrast enhancement. They do however give you the ability to disable these features giving you greater control over picture quality.
The sound is so so. Their "incredible sound" technology is far from incredible, but gets the job done. I have only used the speakers on this set for about an hour while i was hooking up my surround, but from what I heard it was nothing amazing, but was not lacking. In short the sound is average, about what I would expect (thats not too much help I know, but given the cost I assumed before I purchased that it wouldnt knock my socks off.)
420p, 720p, and 1080i content looks ok. The quality of the source matters obviously and there was a noticeable difference in picture quality when switching between sources (in this case an insignia 1080i up-converting dvd player and the the oppo DV-981HD in the other room.) I tried them on all settings lowest to highest and obviously the oppo outpreformed. However the picture quality was still shy of what i would call great. Still grainy, very grainy during dark scenes. If you are going to up-convert I would suggest using a quality player (obviously) for the best picture quality.
Overall, for the money, I have not viewed a better performing TV in theis price range, 1000-1250(again, personal opinion). I am no a/v expert, but I did my fair share of research and compared many different TV's. For the money, this was the best possible picture I could find. A very good friend owns the Toshiba 42RV530U and this was one of the LCD's i compared it with. To me, the Philips outperformed. Again, this is my personal opinion and I do not know much by way of LCD's, I do however know what I like when it comes to picture quality. I would not rule this one out by any means.
Hope this helps even a little bit. I should note that this is being used as a second (primarily gaming and blue-ray) LCD. It is in a fairly small room ad I sit roughly 8 feet away.
armartin812 05-02-08, 03:02 PM Thanks for the response lemons. I was planning on getting my new TV sometime this month. I checked with my local Target to see if I could bring my PS3 up there and check how it looks on their display model and they said it was ok. It's pretty funny that your friend has the Toshiba 42RV530 because I was also looking at that TV as well. But it's good to hear from someone with experience with both of the TVs.
I currently have a Philips CRT that is working fine, but not having 720p is really annoying now and I want to see Blu-Rays the way their supposed to be seen. Like you I have a surround sound system so the speaker output on the TV are a non factor for me. Once again, thanks for your input Lemons. It's much appreciated.
lemons22 05-02-08, 11:29 PM Here is a pic of it in the room so you have an idea of how far away I am when viewing.
Just bought one at Costco... $1199 Beautiful picture and very thin set!
plusplus 05-05-08, 07:56 PM I purchased the Philips 47” 3603 from Wal-mart this weekend. They had just gotten the set in the night before and did not even have a display setup. I was planning on purchasing the 46” Vizio and graduating my current 37” Vizio to the bedroom. I have been real pleased w/ my Vizio‘s picture quality, but after talking with some folks I decided to get the Philips 47” for about $1500 (about $200 more than the Vizio).
The set was easy to get started, but I am struggling with the picture settings. I’m not a tech guy, so in layman’s terms…I am noticing a fair amount of trash on the screen, some pixelization and non-clearly defined lines on some shows. I have Cox HD and digital cable. I am trying to optimize the picture quality to watch HD and regular digital TV (1080i w/ component). So far some shows look great, some broken-up, some fuzzy. Looking at the Pixel Plus demo, I sometimes think the non-plus side looks better - less bright, but more crisp/clear picture. I’m wondering if the picture on the old 37” Vizio was better that the 47” and if the 46” Vizio may have better picture quality than the Philips.
My current picture settings are
Contrast 100
Brightness 47
Color 49
Tint 0
Sharpness 2
Color temp cool
Dynamic contrast off
DNR on
Color enhancement on
Active control on w/out light sensor
Any suggestion and advice to optimize picture quality is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Save your receipt, FX35TN. Costco is taking an extra $200 off May 15-June 1st in their latest coupon booklet. You should be able to get an adjustment no problem within 30 days (longer with a little haggling).

As a former owner of the 42" 7403 I can say that currently the 4069 is a better set. The 7403 series has a lot of bugs that need to be worked out. Plus it has no user backlight control and the blackight tie-in to the brightness and contrast is broken.

what other bugs? The tv seems to be workign fine for me

Instead of using an independent backlight control like on most LCD sets Philips adjusts the backlight according to the contrast and brightness settings. However, on my 7403 the backlight never lowered only the contrast or brightness did respectively. The only option I had was to use active control but it wouldn’t always pick the right settings and tend to wash out faces.

I see....but the blacks are incredible on this set!! almost compares to the samsung models!
I haven't noticed any issues with brightness.....if i think it is too bright...I just put it on the power saver setting or movie mode which dims it and causes less strain on the eye as i usually watch tv before going to sleep
If i want something bright during the day while I am gaming or something, i Just set it to game mode...what do you think about this?

The problem with the modes are as soon as you adjust the picture it puts in into the personal mode. The preset modes suck, well at least they aren't close to the D65 standard.

No Philips is not very good, and known for poor reliability.
true?? False??......are these the best version out there now??....
Michel_K17 05-21-08, 11:50 PM Like a few others on this forum, I purchased the Philips 47" from Target. Walmart's price just dropped by $100. I'll be off to Target to get the difference (not sure if they have a price match policy).
Here is the Walmart current price at $1394:
walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9252217
abaco24 05-22-08, 02:56 PM The 47PFL3603D is at Walmart.com for $1394 with free store delivery. No Costos in my area, anyone found a cheaper price?
OrcSlayer69 05-23-08, 01:47 AM Can anyone recommend a picture setting for the 3603 as far as aspect ratio goes? the auto feature keeps changing aspect ratios, for example, when i watch sportscenter on espnhd.
what are the new 47 and 52" models with ambilight and what stores/sites have them? Do costco or sams have the ambilight version. I saw in costco coupon book they have the 47" coming up on sale and then the 52" after that later in the summer but not sure if they are the ambilight version cus they dont list the model # and i'm not sure which models 47 and 52" are ambilight anwyay.
edit: ok the 52PFL7603D is the flagship 52" (largest model) with ambilight. Already have a 47pfl7432 (i think thats it) last years 47" ambilight model at the beach and wanted to get a 52 for there and bring 47 home for bedroom but now i may have to keep this new model in bedroom though its probably going to be way big for the bedroom but I can't just get another 47" model. what to do.
when will the 52PFL7603D be out anyway? seems like they are all a little delayed
ResOGlas 06-05-08, 07:27 AM when will the 52PFL7603D be out anyway? seems like they are all a little delayed
Cancelled. :(
that model is canceled?
so there isn't going to be any 52" model with ambilight this year?
if that's the case ill just get last years 52" ambilight model and get this years 47" ambilight model. who has it cheapest? walmart or costco? there only is one 47" model with ambilight right?
then id have to sell last years 47" model with ambilight that is at the shore place, ugh, and its barely used. prob just be lazy and keep it but really wanted to upgrade to 52" there and up my old 42pf9631 in bedroom to the new 2008 47" ambilighht model.
will have to sell the 42 as it is so maybe ill just do that and get the new 47 ambi and stick with last years 47 ambi at the beach.
its just if they really aren't offering a 52" ambilight model this year Id like to try & find last years.
I think u might be wrong though. they wouldn't just suddenly not offer a 52" model with ambilight.
bradleyt 06-06-08, 05:45 PM that model is canceled?
I think u might be wrong though. they wouldn't just suddenly not offer a 52" model with ambilight.
You are right, Quatre. Philips didn't just cancel the new 52" ambilight model --they cancelled ALL the 2008 ambilight models, and non-ambilight models are in short supply.
wow really? that's horrible news. I remember rumor of them not selling in NA anymore or something and wondered why cus they are good sets for a good price and sold well. plus the ambilight is what set it apart from other sets with similar specs.
ppl use to say ambilight is a novelty but it isn't . backlighting is used in professional video setups and sold separately for use with hdtvs. yes I know its supposed to just be a plain flourescent backlighting but the ambilight has that mode I think and is built in a little more interesting with diff colors while still serving th very real purpose not just novelty.
we love it in the bedroom and at the beach house.
I like the look & specs of the 08 model but now im contemplating just getting the 07 52" ambilight model & keep the 47" one we have instead of getting any new 08 (47 or 52") with no ambilight.

This is sad news. Does anyone know why or know of any links to news stories about this? Ambilight is a great technology, and a great Philips exclusive. Why would they just abandon it?

gatoridp 09-21-08, 12:37 PM Guys, is the "philips" logo on your TV under the screen just a logo or a light?
I thought it was a light but mine never turns on.
Is mine defective? I got a 47PFL3603D here.
Thanks.
lovhybrid 10-18-08, 03:09 AM got this unit from costco 599 shipped.

easy set up, nice frame,Great picture on DTV HD,I'll put it through bluray tonight. I moved a Sony Bravia KDL40V3000 to the bedroom, and I love its picture. I'll be doing some side by side comparison shorlty.

schoat333 12-09-08, 08:20 AM I bought a "black Friday special" Polaroid tlx-04244B at walmart that only lasted a week. So i took it back and they exchanged it for a Philips 42pfl3603d.
So far I like the Philips set up and options better. Tho i have to admit i think the Polaroid had a slightly better picture. I have adjusted the setting to get it to were i like it but its not perfect yet.
Anyone have setting they could recommend. It is mostly used for xbox 360 and directv.
So I'm thinking of a new tv for the bedroom. I went to Sams and they have the 42TA648BX/37 and Target has the 42PFL3603D27. Sam's states theirs has HD Natural motion and Target states Pixes Plus HD. Which is better? Are there any other major differences between the two? Are they both this years models?
cl0ckw0rk 12-28-08, 11:56 PM Hello I have a question:
The owners manual for the Philips 42PFL3603D/27 states it supports 1080p @ 24/25/30/50/60Hz.
Now I am guessing the tv actually has a constant refresh rate of 50/60Hz, right? Does this mean that 24Hz content is converted via 3:2 pulldown?
I mean these panels can't actually refresh at 24Hz right?
Nate Moore 01-04-09, 01:21 AM that is my understanding, it is always 60Hz refresh
Tersanyus 02-13-09, 11:27 AM I know this thread has been dead for over a month but I just bought the 47PFL3603D/F7 from Target a few days ago. Anyone have more experience with this mode? Am having a tough time with picture settings. I have a PS3 connected via HDMI and the Blu-Ray Digital Video Essentals disc. I get it right to the settings on the test patterns but once I go to watch a disc or other channels it looks way washed out.
All I have is connected via HDMI. I can't say I like this set uses the same picture settings for all 4 HDMI inputs.
I know copying picture settings someone else comes up with isn't a great idea. I tried the settings at the top of this page but those didn't look good to me.

I have the 42" version of your TV and use the THX test patterns to calibrate the TV. Doesn't look washed out to me but one quirk is that any changes you do to the modes setting, it changes your Personal mode and not the Standard, Game, Movie, etc.
HDTV Reviews 06-04-09, 04:12 AM Yeah! Thanks for the information.......I'm planning to buy philips lcd.I will do that.....
This TV is too awesome. i have the 42pfl3603d model and am happy with it. turn down the contrast it makes it look better. i believe mine is set to around 60ish.
