I see there is a thread about a new release of MythTV.
1) what does MythTV do EyeTV does not?
2) what's the advantages of MythTV?
3) is there a non-Terminal version of MythTV?

For me, the biggest thing is automated commercial detection and skipping. Next is that it can seek out--on any channel--episodes that you have not seen yet and record them. In general, the recording rules in Myth are much more flexible than EyeTV.

Myth on Mac OS X runs full-screen although I think there is an option to run in a normal Mac window. Keep in mind there is at least one backend--a faceless background service that handles the recording. One or more frontends access the stored recordings. The backend machine can also run the frontend at the same time. I run a combined frontend/backend on a 1.83 Core 2 Duo Mini in the entertainment stack. It is controlled with a Harmony 880 emulating an Apple Remote. I run the frontend on a Mac in the office and usually do all the scheduling from there. Myth has very nice tools to find particular programs and to browse lists by genre, etc. Much better than EyeTV.

Myth on the Mac can only record from the HDHomerun and from firewire-connected STB's. You'd have to set up a Linux box to use other tuners with Myth.

You will have to do quite a bit with Terminal to get Myth installed and running. After that, however, all setup and maintenance is done through menu-driven screens--either keyboard or IR remote controlled.

thanks for the explanation.
In fact, I do have a HDHomeRun. Can Myth also watch wirelessly from the HDHR as EyeTV can or do you have to be connected via Ethernet?
I have no clue about Terminal - will there be a full GUI install version at some point?

You watch HDTV recordings from EyeTV over a wireless connection? Are they recompressed?

"At some point" there may be a full GUI install version--but not in the forseeable future. No offense, but it sounds like Myth is not for you.

yes, with the HDHR you can watch HDTV wireless. For streaming wirelessly it takes 20 mbps so one stream works well. I can't use both streams wirelessly (it has 2 tuners). It's actually pretty cool.

ETVcomskip adds channel skipping to EyeTV and I believe that EyeTV v3 can do this (although I haven't used it so I can't comment on the recording rules)

I would highly recommend SageTV. They recently released a version for Mac OSX. I can't offer any comparisons to MythTV, but like EyeTV, SageTV runs on a single computer. Mine is running on an Intel Core2 Duo Mini with 2GB or RAM and an external Seagate firewire 500, and it rocks the house. Sage has a pretty darn sophisticated integration of the EPG with the recording and scheduling menus, and it is designed to be primarily remote-driven, so it acts more like a commercial settop PVR than a computer. In addition, it allows you to seamlessly search and play online content (You Tube, Google Video, and others). I love mine.

Yeah, I keep waiting for a new Beta that fixes the marginal PQ (compared to EyeTV) while viewing live TV from my HDHR. I think SageTV holds great promise if they can fix the PQ issues and lack of DD5.1. It definitely has a better remote driven interface vs. EyeTV. I guess lack of DD5.1 isn't huge because I can't turn that on in EyeTV without a kernel crash. I'll probably buy it if the current beta ever makes it's to release...

The Mac version is out of beta as far as I know. They keep releasing updates to the Windows version, while the next Mac build has been on the workbench for quite a while. They keep promising that the next release will include an overhaul of the image renderer, which is supposed to fix the stuttering and PQ issues.
