Hi,

I already have an Oppo 980 and it works great...will I see a big improvement by moving up to the new 983?

I am using a 61" RCA Scenium RPTV right now but am planning on going to a Pioneer or Panasonic 60 or 65 inch plasma soon.

Thanks!

Thanks!Actually yes, you will notice the improved PQ (colors, sharpness, more film like, increased details) as observed on everything from old television shows to the latest movies. Since the Oppo 983H has no macroblocking issues, this will work great with your current 61" DLP RPTV. The zoom functions are improved.

If you enjoy what you have, I'd say no. Save your money for a good BD player.

i own neither a 980 or 983 (yet) but at least one beta tester in the 983 thread seem to feel that the 983s increase in pq is most noticeable on larger front projection screens. tho im sure you'd notice a little improvement on a 60" display.

based on that, i would think u should keep the 980 (which is no slouch) and like the above poster said, use $ for a bd player.

edit-980 and 983 dont use faroudja chip (981 does) so they should not be a cause of macroblocking.

I agree with the above 2 posters. If you already have a 980 I would wait and pick up a good BD player. I have a 980 too and I'm going to wait to see what OPPO has to offer with their BD player later this year. The 980 has been a great player on my 60" sony sdrx and can't see the 983 having that much better PQ for the price difference.

What I really enjoy is being able to zoom a non-anamorphic widescreen to fit my 61" display without any loss of resolution. Watching some old television 1968 - 1972 shows showed noticeable increased details, sharpness, and much more intense colors. The cloths that people wore just really stood out, compared to what I viewed on the Oppo 980H. Since none of the current BR players offer this type of SD upconverting performance, this player should be considered if you have a desire to view your SD-DVD's at their very best.

Thanks for the input guys, I do have a PS3 already for BD which as far as I know is still one of the best BD players out there....

I think I will likely stick with the 980 unless the price on the 983 drops some.....I assume I could sell my 980 for at least $100 so it would be a $300 upgrade as of 983's MSRP right now. I think a $100-$150 upgrade would be more what I would want to spend.

I wish they were sold in stores so I could pick one up and do an in-home comparison and then just return it if I don't see a noticeable difference.

I'm still debating between the 980 and 983 (have not used either unit). - I have an ISF'd 60" SXRD (A3000). I own the Panasonic BD30 which is a fantastic Blu-ray player and does everything I could want - except decent deinterlacing/scaling of SD DVD. The thing is, I just don't watch a ton of DVD anymore, but when I do, I want real good performance and especially for some of my favorite movies which may be a while before coming to BD. From what I'm told by a few folks, the differences between the 983 and 980 might not be worth the extra money, but I'm still deciding what I want to do.

I used to own an Oppo 970 when I had my previous CRT RPTV - and I thought its performance was about slightly above average, but I'm not sure if the 980 is better, nor how it would perform with my current display.

yer making it sound soooooooo good! (the 983, i mean).
i asked in the 983 thread if someone could put up 'the abyss' (letterboxed non-anamorphic 2.35x1). they did and they said it looked pretty good.

i gotta wait a month or so. have some large med bills (over insurance) to cover and just spent a grand on one of my cars for repairs.
im not complaining tho, i gotta bunch (?-how many do i need !) of pretty good players now so i wont miss much.

I am trying to decide between these two players. Neuromancer has recommended the 980H, but I'm wondering if I should spend the extra $225 and just go for the 983H

For at least one year, I am going to keep my 55" HD CRT RPTV. It's ISF'd, so no problems there. Problem is, it only takes 480p component from a DVD player. Normally, the 980H will be sufficient. But... if I going to upgrade to a new display in 12 months, I'm thinking I might just as well go for the 983H.

Are there any differences in the 980H and 983H via 480p component?

Yes. The biggest advantage of the 983 over the 980 is the deinterlacing and associated post-processing. My TV's scaling is excellent and I can see a big difference between the 980 and 983 at 480p. If your TV has good detail resolution and decent scaling you will notice the difference at 480p.

Important Note: you will only benefit from the 983 if you are using HDMI though...
