Can't post a tagged link yet, but here is the URL for the room layout. (should be in scale, or close to it)

Long story short, I just got the Onkyo SR800 7.1 system. Happy with placement for center, front left+right, and subwoofer, which leaves the 4 surrounds.

THe room is 12x20 (about 8 foot ceiling), with a fireplace in middle of the 20 feet side--this is where the TV is. Directly across is the couch where we will be sitting--it's flush against the wall. There's a stairwell in one corner of the room which makes the room not a normal rectangle, and so I'm not sure how to place to surround right+left -- is it ok for the left speaker to be several feet closer to listening position than the right speaker? How high should they be mounted ("2 to 3 feet above ear level" seems to be the common response?)

And with regards to the surround back right+left -- the couch where we sit is flush against the wall leaving probably about a foot from ear to wall. The Onkyo surround speakers are probably 5 inches wide, so there's very little distance from speaker to ear. How high should they be? How far apart? Angled down at us? Or just forgotten... (right now they're just sitting on the back of the couch) Finding lots of contradictory stuff between dolby digital official pages (rear surround speakers far apart) vs Onkyo manual (rear surround speakers right next to each other), etc.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, hope I've been clear!

if your couch is right against the back wall, I would not bother with the rear surrounds.
I would just mount your r/l surrounds on the side walls back as far as you can about
5-6' of the ground. It's ok if one is closer to you, use the reciever to adjust the loudness of the speaker so they sound the same in the sweet spot.

Try this. It's the way mine is setup. I have the same shape room as you.

With the couch against the wall, you won't reap the benefits from the rears.
