Apparently, this is an older-model Sony DVD/SACD/CD player, released in 2005-2006, but is still in Sony's current (2008) product line-up. I just purchased two refurbished units online for about half their retail price (more were still available as of this post date). Will be using them as dedicated SACD/CD-audio players, with my Sony STR-DA5300ES receivers. I like the customization that comes with dedicated-source units.

The DVP-NS90V's Super Audio CD playback capability (albeit, with some stipulations) is also a nice bonus to have in this sleek, good-looking player, which I think makes an excellent, low-cost, dedicated CD-audio player for your system. A couple things you should know, however, before buying:

• No DSD output from either of its digital outputs (coax or optical).
• No DSD output from its HDMI output.
• SACD output is only available through its multi-channel RCA outputs.
• Upconverts only up to 1080i.
• Reported slow, disc start-up times (perhaps, regarding DVDs, and not CDs).
• Unique, dedicated, "slow" and "fast" audio/video playback buttons (great feature for musicians).

Again, I don't plan on using th DVP-NS90Vs to play DVDs, since they only upconvert to 1080i—I recently bought a Sony DVP-NS77 1080p-upconverting, standard-definition DVD player to source DVDs. Haven't received the DVP-NS90V units yet, but would like to hear from other Sony DVP-NS90V owners on the forum.

shouldn't t his thread be here instead (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=30&f=18)?Well, I didn't put it in "DVD players," because I think this product's greater value is in its use as a dedicated SA-CD/CD-DA player, and not as a DVD player. Besides, why would anyone pay over twice the price of any current-model, 1080p upconverting DVD player, for a player which only upconverts to 1080i? Also, I thought this player is noteworthy as a dedicated SA-CD/CD-DA player for those who prefer discrete source components in their systems. Or, for those who simply wish to sample the SA-CD experience at a budget-price. I believe it's the least-expensive SA-CD player Sony currently offers, and, I think that bears noting to newcomers and others who may have been interested in exploring the SA-CD format, but were leary of investing in an uber-expensive, ES-class, Sony SA-CD player, just to "try it out."

As of a couple of months ago, this (http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f7/refurbished-sony-dvp-ns775v-dvd-sacd-cd-player-60-00-shipped-262642/) was the best deal on a Sony SACD-capable player.

BTW, to maximize SACD performance, turn off/disable the digital outputs.

I personally boycott anything Sony. It's the Walmart of electronics. I'm surprised it didn't come with the warning: "If you attempt to play copyrighted material in this unit, you will be arrested by the FBI (and Interpol) and/or this machine will disable itself and/or we will install malware on your tv....etc."
Good luck with your new purchase.:(

The manual also states that you can optimize SA-CD performance by turning off its video functions (it has a dedicated switch to do this). Couldn't really figure out where on that page to look. I got two refurbs for almost half its retail price with free shipping, at that "big auction site." They still had more.

Does the player have true DSD D/A converters? IF it does then it's probably a good deal.

Does the player have true DSD D/A converters? IF it does then it's probably a good deal.I dunno. It ONLY outputs SA-CD audio via its multi-channel analog RCAs, so I presume it's doing the DSD D/A internally, since all it can do to get an SA-CD audio signal out, is to spit out an analog multi-channel signal. It's got an SA-CD pilot light and SA-CD logos all over it. Just received them today (finally). Don't have any SA-CD media yet, but it plays standard CD-DAs just fine over HDMI.
