View Full Version : Toast 9 is out-- BD and HD DVD authoring!
Nathan_R 03-19-08, 09:42 AM Toast 9 Titanium is available from Roxio's website and it supports BD and HD DVD authoring. I authored a Blu-ray movie on my mini directly from my TiVo using the included TiVo Transfer app.
Thank you Roxio-- BD and HD DVD authoring were the only things forcing me to keep a Windows partition in the house!
In short, even without the HDM authoring aspects, 9 is a much smoother app than Toast 8 and it's well worth the $80 upgrade.

HealeyGuy 03-19-08, 04:04 PM Actually there is a $59.99 upgrade currently available at Roxio's site for prior Toast 8, Crunch or Popcorn 3 owners. Click the upgrade center button at the top left of the Roxio home page and then click Toast 8 (at this time they haven't updated the text on that page). If you are eligible for this upgrade but paid for the $79.99 upgrade I suggest contacting Roxio's customer service or using Roxio's refund policy and repurchasing at the lower cost.
The HD/Blu-Ray plugin is included, although Roxio says it will be charging an additional $20 for this some time in the future.
I'm not affiliated with Roxio and so far am very pleased with the new Toast.
So, HD DVD authoring just refers to burning HD DVD compatible media, right? Or is it also able to create HDi menus and stuff?
HealeyGuy 03-19-08, 04:37 PM Here is the description from Roxio's site:
"The new HD/BD plug-in for Toast 9 gives users the ability to author high definition video content on to Blu-ray, or even standard DVD discs! Take high-def video footage from AVCHD camcorders, TiVo and EyeTV and create Blu-ray discs that can be played on any standard Blu-ray set top box or Playstation3 game console. Did you invest in HD DVD? The HD/BD Plug-in even supports HD DVD formats and disc players."
However, This thread (http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=36433&view=findpost&p=193219) in the Toast 9 forum indicates it doesn't actually work with Playstation3.

Actually, it's got lots of problems. I got it yesterday and spent several hours trying to burn HDV clips as a Blu-Ray disc onto a DVD-R. I imagine that this feature is one of the main reasons folks have upgraded from previous versions.
Regrettably, the program crashes a lot or gives an error message that there is something wrong with the clip. A visit to the Toast 9 forum at Roxio reveals that not very many people have had any success making a BD onto a DVD-R. Roxio seems to be looking into this problem but as of yet there is nothing new.
I finally had some success this morning by running some Final Cut edited programs through Compressor as MPEG 2 and then importing the resulting audio and video files into Toast. I actually have a burned DVD-R that has BD file structures on it and it plays in my Samsung BD-1400 player. I haven't looked at the disk through our 1080p projector yet so I can't comment on how it looks.
Bottom line - Roxio has some work to do on this release. Maybe a lot of work. Another case of the consumer being drafted as a beta tester. Buyer beware most certainly applies in this case.
Nathan_R 03-24-08, 09:35 AM Oh man, I am absolutely loving this release! I've been using it for 4 or 5 days now, and I can confidently say that this is by far the easiest DVR-to-BD tool out there in my opinion. All of my homemade discs work perfectly on my BD30, which is something I couldn't say with any the Windows authoring tools I've tried over the last two years. It's nice to push just one button and come back a few hours later to find a shiny new BD waiting for me.
Ted Todorov 03-24-08, 10:09 AM Has anyone tried authoring a BD DVD-R from a 1080i or 720P EyeTV recording?
JJJatAVS 03-29-08, 08:31 AM bug fixes are done:

I have Toast 9 on my Mac Pro and the most recent available patches (version 9.0.2 build 261 with the HD plug-in installed). I was thrilled to see that when I dropped some AVCHD video (which is Blu-ray under the covers, essentially) from my camcorder onto Toast 9 in Blu-ray video mode it authored a DVD-R for me immediately. No errors, and no foolish attempt to transcode something already in the correct format! It just multiplexed what it needed to and created what appears to be a proper file structure and burned right out to disc/image.
However now I'm faced with a bit of a pickle - how the heck can I test this disc/image? I don't have a standalone Blu-ray player and definitely don't plan to buy one for a long time (like, when they're affordable and even remotely compatible with each other). Looking around, I don't see a software BDMV capable player for OSX anywhere.
For reals? Do I have to use PowerDVD Ultra in one of my Windows virtual machines or something? Say it ain't so...
Why can't you just buy an external BluRay drive and use that with your Mac Pro? The one from Pioneer is under $200.

Well, one response would be because I don't want one, but a better response would be because I don't need one for any reason and it wouldn't even solve the problem in question.
I'm talking about DVD-R media with BDMV on it. If there isn't software to play it on my mac, adding hardware to the mac isn't going to magically change that fact.

I was under the impression that DVD-Player in Leopard supported BluRay playback. I was planning to try this very solution on my Leopard Mini. But now I've been reading that BluRay support hasn't been released yet. Hopefully we'll get it soon in an OS update.

Nope, afraid not. I'd read probably the same news you're referring to, some time last year. The reality of things is that there was BDMV support in the DVD Player application in certain beta releases of 10.5 but no such support appears to exist in the retail version of Leopard.
For now, I'm just going to try testing my stuff out in one of my XP virtual machines I guess.
gaderson 04-27-08, 11:12 AM So, anyone try to edit a TiVo recording? Seems, the old frame selection bug from eyeTV is back. Need to check the older version of Toast 9 to see if it was an added problem like eyeTV would always do.
