View Full Version : When subwoofer cable is plugged into "Y" it stops Shakers from working. Why?

OK, I have a an H/K 635 as my main receiver. There is currently a Y splitter plugged into the Subwoofer Pre-Out. When I plug the cable from my bass shakers there is no problem. They work fine. Only until I plug in the subwoofer cable does all the bass stop. Shakers nor sub works.

If I plug the shakers directly in to the Sub preout, they work. If I plug my sub cable direct into the preout, it doens't work either.

It can't be the receiver, because the shakers work. The sub has been tested with a CD player. It also works if I bring the sub beside the receiver and use any ole RCA cable.

So why is my cable messed up? I'm going to re solder again. BUT, last thing, when I plug in the cable into the sub (this non working cable) I still get the hum.

Any idea? if that's clear.

My guess is the Y lead is cancelling out the signal this isn’t usual. If you found say a really cheap audio mixer with lots of inputs then simply use those inputs.

Input
Channel 1 plug in the sub bass shaker lead and turn pan pot to the left

Channel 2 plug in the sub bass lead for the sub bass speaker turn the pan pot to the right

Now plug in the leads. There will be two basic stereo outputs or outputs okay! There will be individual faders or sliders on each channel most mixers may have six channels or countless across the mixing desk but don’t confuse this with DVD 5.1 okay.:D Now fade them up as well as the master fader.

Now you should be getting some kind of performance as well as keep an eye on the VU meters I use mixer to handle the LCRS and LFE.1 real easy and simple no fuss no hassle just simple and it doesn’t cost the earth. Look around eBay for basic six-channel audio mixer.

I'd say it has to be the cable you're using for the sub, if the sub works plugged in with a different cable.

There must be a short in the cable that doesn't work and when it's plugged into the "Y" it effectively shorts the other path too. If you've been soldering on the cable, that would be the first place I'd look. Mebbe bridged the connection or got it too hot and melted the insulation.

Sounds like you need to replace the sub cable. If you can connect a plain RCA cable to your sub and the Y connector then that would confirm that your sub cable is shorted. Also is you connect the bad sub cable to the Y connector without the sub connected on the other end and your shakers quit working, that also confirms a bad cable. Do you have an ohmmeter to check for a short in the cable?
