I need to occasionally switch to/from speaker output to spdif. Changing in it Vista Audio seems to require a reboot.

I was hoping this was a registry entry and I could create a couple of .reg files to run when needed. My AVR doesn't have a "second audio out".

In Windows XP you can do this with Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Audio (tab), Sound Playback .. Default Device.

Oops, I can change it w/o a reboot. Not sure why it didn't work the first time I tried.
