i have layed out my basement to what i think will work best with the space. the only existing walls are the wine cellar and storage closet, everything else is my plan.

my concern is that dividing the main space into a gym and media room may not be the best use of the space, planning ahead when its time to sell. it also seems odd to have the gym enclosed and the media room with windows and a sliding door, but if the rooms are reversed, the closet and bath would be one wall of the media room. what do you think is worse?

i could put up half walls instead, but was thinking of having the TV mounted on the wall between the media room and gym. if i mounted the tv on the right wall, i could have a half wall, but then it would be a long narrow space, instead of a short wide space.

some other ideas:

i could nix the workshop and have the gym in that corner, then have the entire area be a den/media room. really want a small workshop though :)

i could split the space vertically instead of horizontally, with the gym by the sliding door, and the tv along the long (right) wall. thats probably bad for a decent sound setup though.

Thanks for help, this has been holding back my renovation process for a couple months now. :(

any other ideas, or am i just trying to fit too much into this space?

Is the room completely open now? What if you ran a wall south from the storage room down to ute media room? That reduce the size of the gym, but if you then made the media rooom into an L shape, it could be more of an entertainment area instead of a dedicated theatre room. I'm not sure if that matters to you like it does to me.

except for closet, a blank slate. ideally, the media setup could have gone where the storage closet is, but thats my only drain pipe in that area, so i used it for the closet and future half (full?) bath.

i thought of an L shape, but it would be tight for the gym, and turn the area between the gym and mech space into a hallway feeling. we plan on putting a set of cabinets on the long wall of the mech room for pantry goods..

if i nix the workshop, i can put gym there, then have an entire open area. (better for resale im sure). not ideal for HT setup, but my true mancave can always come with the next house.

worse than no media room is no workshop. i dont want to use my garage. :( i guess thats my decision really, unless i split like how ive shown.
time for some tape on the floor to get a feeling. lol.

Are you wanting to make the media room into a complete home theater with HT seating and a large screen or are you wanting to keep it for tv family room viewing?

You could split the area up vertically and cover up one of the windows with a screen like buffbaker did in his. Maybe do your L shape like he did. I'm terrible with seeing things on construction plans. Keep looking at what other people have done. Check out the before and after thread. Your area looks like it depends on how much you want allocated for your home gym.

For a half wall look, I found a website, spacements.com and got some ideas from it. They have a few pictures to look at.

Just a thought. I would go ahead and finish off your workshop space with framed walls and drywall. That way it counts in the finished space calculation for resale and someone else could visualize it's use for a home office etc.

not sure about the ultimate plan. dedicated HT would be nice, but a bad use of space and resale for my townhouse. an L shape is too tight for my gym equipment. i think you are right. im trying to fit a lot into the area. ill have to sketch my gym stuff better and lay it out.

another idea is to put the gym where the workshop is, put a smaller workshop in front of the sliding door (lower left), closed off, then the L pattern going the other way. I can mount the TV on the long wall, with a bar area behind it, or to the left, adjacent to the closet.

ill have to CAD it up and share.. :)

thanks for the links!

definately, everything will be finished in some form or another. some areas may be missing ceiling, some may be missing floor covering, (tile most likely everywhere), but all walls will be done once i get to home depot.
