View Full Version : Tell me what to do!
atdamico 03-20-08, 05:09 PM I need somebody to tell me what amp to buy, what prepro to buy, or even if I need one. Should I buy a receiver instead? Oh and what speakers should I get and will they sound good? And how about that DVD and CD player. Please tell me which ones to buy as I am too lazy to go out and do this for myself. As to wires. Should I go with thick ones, thin ones, expensive ones, cheap ones? How about displays. Can somebody tell me whether to go plasma, DLP, LCD, projector, or what. And how do I set all this stuff up? I know I can use the search function, read books, and figure it out for myself but I would much rather get all of you to tell me what to do so I don't have to think about it. And how about a sub. Can you tell me which brand is the best and how should I set my speakers up? So basically what I need is for all of the experts here to tell me what to buy, what to do, what I like, what I don't like, where to get it, how much to pay, how it all works, and maybe wipe my butt when I go to the bathroom.
Is it just me, or besides the usual wire rants, has this site devolved into an endless stream of the above post??? Or am I just having one BITCH of a day and using this site to blow off steam :eek::D
Sorry, I forgot the most important thing. I only want to spend about $300.
plnorris 03-20-08, 06:12 PM All you need is a clock radio and an old abstract painting to stare at. Those can both be had for well under 50 bucks so long as the "display" is just a print and not an original. You remind me of the troll from the story Three Billy Goats Gruff. Matter of fact you should read that book, it might help take your mind off of all those other "serious issues" that bother you so much. And don't forget, tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life!
mcnarus 03-20-08, 06:47 PM Or am I just having one BITCH of a day
Nah, sounds like the same old Tom. :)
mcnarus 03-20-08, 09:55 PM More seriously, newbies have to start from nothing, and we do get our share of newbies here. The appropriate response is patience. If you can't muster that (Tom), then maybe you should just ignore those posts and move on.
Of course, part of the problem is that (relative) newbies are often intimidated by the pretentious bulls**t that permeates the high-end press. If you tell people that it takes years of ear training to tell the difference between one cable or DAC and another, then of course they're going to want to short-circuit that and just ask what's the best in their price range.
The other thing to remember is that most newbies are not audiophiles and never will be, and that's fine. But the advice you'd give to someone who wants to be an audiophile is (or should be, at least) very different from the advice you give to someone who just wants to buy a good-sounding system and then not think about it again.
andylim 03-21-08, 12:19 AM I'm one of those newbies that started off from nothing... I must say I appreciate the friendly help that I got from the members (including mcnarus) on this site. Thanks to their help I was able to purchase a decent budget system and enjoy my music. I am not an audiophile, but I do enjoy researching before I buy something and getting my money's worth. We all can't be experts at everything, so I enjoy learning from people who have more experience at their hobbies. As for using the search function, each situation is bound to be different so searching the forum doesn't yield a solution for everyone. So while I can understand your frustration, I don't understand the need to vent about it. If someone is asking for help in a public place do you tell them to their face to shut up? Common courtesy suggest you either help them or ignore and move on.

I think you're being unfair as far as atdamico's OP.
1. Search is very effective here, yet seldom used. And there's always Google. Again, seldom used.
2. As far as public discourse on a board like this, it's fair to expect those that ask questions to put in some effort. I hear atdamico noting the lack of reciprocity on many threads--someone asks a question and then expects others to all their work for them.
And, finally, note that atdamico & mcnarus are having disagreements on other threads, so some context is helpful here.
Chu Gai 03-21-08, 09:08 AM You don't need an amp
Same on the prepro
Yes, get a receiver.
Get small round speakers. They sound fine. Your wife likes them because they're small like your penis. You like them because they remind you of the boobs she doesn't have.
Just pick up a DVD player when you go food shopping.
See what's laying around in the construction site for wires.
DLP.
Ask your kid or the guy whose banging your wife when you go to work. Probably your unemployed cousin.
Buy the sub from the same people you bought the speakers from. Don't you want to match? It doesn't matter which one you buy. There's enough people on this forum who own the same sh!t as you who are very happy and will make you feel secure.
Put the speakers where you won't trip on them.
Put the sub where you can rest your beer on it.
Chu Gai...
You crack me up! I can't stop laughing...

Well, you can buy a 1 year movie pass from these folks:
http://www.sfcinemacity.com/
That will cost you about $240.
Oh, sorry. That's in Thailand. Transportation is extra. :)
And you can't afford the equivalent pass in the Netherlands. :D
