View Full Version : High Re-sale HD-DVDs (Jack Ryan Collection)
I'm just curious to see who is willing or who thinks it's worth it to pay a pretty high premium for some of the HD disks floating around out there. I'm specifically referring to the Jack Ryan collection. I was (apparently) lucky enough to snag Red October and the Sum of all fears for less than $40 shipped ($20 for RO and $16 for SOAF)... in looking at some of the eBay auctions there have been copies of Red October selling for >$80! Heck, right now there's an auction for the full collection fetching >$160.
As disks stop getting pressed I'd bet some other disks may rise in price for a bit... not all, but there is a potential.
Bottom line: Would you rather pay a premium for a disk on HD or wait for it on Blu?
** EDIT ** Option 2 should read: Wait for the disk on Blu-Ray (at least they rhyme)
webdev511 03-20-08, 09:02 PM um, you're poll is messed up. shouldn't your second choice say "Wait for the disc on Blu-Ray" ?

Yeah see my edit...
I'm not buying anymore discs on HD, period.
I'll be switching over completely to BR when the next generation players come out about June.

I am still buying the titles I WANT on HD DVD and will buy titles on Blu if they aren't double dips and have the features I expect them to.
I'm not paying a premium for ANY HD-DVD.
ChrisW6ATV 03-20-08, 09:52 PM I would rather pay a lower price for titles when they are on Blu-ray, or Ebay. :)
ti-triodes 03-21-08, 12:02 AM I just bought Equilibrium because I really wanted it. Otherwise, I'll just watch upconverted DVD's on my XA2 till they come out in Blu-- and Blu makes a player as advanced as the XA2.
It should be a long wait.
DCSholtis 03-21-08, 02:04 PM IF an opportunity arises I'd by now at a premium rather than wait for a Blu version. If nothing more than to piss off Paramount....
I'd buy any hd-dvd $10 or less. I'd buy any blu-ray $15 or less.
Of course there are always exceptions. :D

That's basically my price point as well. I may go as high as $15 for newer HD-DVD's on occasion, but never above that. In fact most I would not even pay $10 for.

Most Hollywood crap doesn't even worth $10, I agree and I don't even buy worthless ones. However I am willing to pay very high prices for movies I hold high e.g. my imports (La Haine, The Elephant Man etc.) or my Blade Runner briefcase etc. :)
LostInPa 03-22-08, 07:23 AM Yeah honestly I don't think anything is worth much money either, esp. not a premium price. I have purchased a few titles as of late at HV, watched the movies, decided they were once and done movies (American Gangster and Into The Wild) so I put them up for sale on EBay and still turned a profit. One sold for $16.xx and the other $22.xx which was awesome considering I got to watch them and they only cost me $7.50 each.
I see people buying a ton of HD DVDs because they were on sale at BB and I would look and look at the list of movies and wonder why in the world people would even pay $5 for these titles, but I guess people get a little out of touch when they "think" they are getting a great deal.
guitarplayer 03-22-08, 08:46 AM I've bought a few that I'd never seen before because they were movies I wanted to see but the only one I've paid over $20 for is Mr. Bean's Holiday, because my kids really wanted to get it, and it was a combo at walmart for $29.00. They watch it quite a lot so it was worth it to me because of that. I will continue to buy discs that I think I'd like to have but I won't pay more than a standard dvd price at this point unless there is something special about them or they're just a hard to find disc. TMNT, for example, although I did find that one marked down from $39 to $16.99 at a local Hastings store. Most of my discs have been $10.49 or less. I put an ad in the local paper just for grins that I am looking to buy discs and I had one guy call me and offer me his 5 free offer discs, none of which I had except for one, for $30.00, and they were still sealed, so that was an exceptional deal.
I figure I will pick up a blu player in the next few months so if it's a title that I think will be available on blu for a reasonable price, unless I just really want to see it now, or it's a crazy good deal I will probably start holding off on those discs til I have a blu player. I have been on a sort of buying binge lately, and I actually have about 10 more discs in my Amazon cart that I will probably bite the bullet on either today or tomorrow. It's been ok because I have somehow had a little more disposable income the last month or two, but realistically I shouldn't keep that habit up beyond a reasonable point, and I'm about to reach that point.
LarryChanin 03-22-08, 12:21 PM Hi,
Depending on the title and features I would pay a "reasonable" premium for an HD DVD now, rather than waiting for the Blu-ray release.
For example, Terminator 2, which most agree is the best of the series, has three foreign HD DVD releases. The German version costs a little less than $50 shipped, but it contains hours of extras and interactive features that appear to surpass what other HD DVD discs have done with interactivity. Interactivity may not appeal to others, but I like the idea of owning a classic sci-fi, with lots of background information and special features, on a limited release disc, on a defunct format. Although I'd likely never resell the disc, it appeals to me that it stands a good chance of eventually becoming a collector's item, valued at more than the premium I paid.
With specific regard to your question about the Jack Ryan Collection, I very much like that series, but it lacks the uniqueness of the T2 title I mentioned, and therefore I would not pay a premium for the collection.

Hmmm. My kids are the same way about Mr. Bean's Holiday. They love it. As far as the Jack Ryan collection goes, It's all about how bad you really want it. Will it ever be released again after two failed attempts to bring it to market on HD DVD? No. Is what's out there all there is ever going to be? Yes. Is there an extremely small supply in the open market? Yes. I think it will be a collectible for those who got their hands on it (me ;)) and a money maker for years to come for those selling it. I think this way regarless of if it comes to BD or not.
Super XP 03-22-08, 02:14 PM Definitely on HD DVD hands down.
Imeldhil 03-22-08, 08:27 PM well I'm selling mine's on ebay for 65 euros+shipping
rlsmith 03-22-08, 08:32 PM I believe that the Jack Ryan Collection was originally announced for Blu-ray with special features, which were lacking on the HD DVD version of the collection. [Sorry, I no longer have the reference.]
Those that want these features might considering waiting for the Blu-ray version.

Both the HD DVD and Blu Ray versions were announced with the features. The BD was canceled, the HD was released, the HD box had the feature info on it, but the features were not on disc.
LostInPa 03-23-08, 12:14 AM IMO if some of these so called premium or exclusive titles do end up on BD then the value of the same movie on HDDVD will fall drastically. Even if the BD release does not contain the same features as its HDDVD counterpart. I think a only a tiny, and I mean tiny percentage of the general purchasing public give any thought/time to extra features.
I did not vote because I already have mostof the titles I really wanted on HD (I actually miss only two, as far as I know). On the other hand, I do not know what I would do if that were not the case, especially because I am not sure at all that all titles that have been available on HD will one day be available in a comparable BD transfer. XXX is a good example (though the movie may not be to everyone's taste!). Anyway, my general philosophy is this: if you have your hands on something that's of interest to you and if that thing is not stupidly expensive and you can afford it, grab it. You only live once.
