View Full Version : Samsung 5084 Dithering.
crfracer290 03-21-08, 12:32 AM I recently purchased a Samsung 5084 from Vanns for a really good price. I received the set a few days ago and I am having some problems with what I think is dithering.
I have very good eyesight and when sitting about 7-8 feet from the set, I am seeing alot of noise in the picture. I can mostly describe it as little ants dancing across the screen. Its most noticeable on solid colors and when watching a high def source such as HD DVD. It is also very noticeable in dark areas and the noise appears to be small screen dots.
What I am wondering is if this problem is just my specific set, or all the 5084 sets. I know I have heard people mention a similar effect, but I have it to the extent where is makes viewing very displeasing.
I am most likely going to return this set (barring Vanns does not give me alot of trouble.)...But I am not sure if I have a defective unit, or if I get another 5084 I will have this same problem. I also thought about just returning it and getting a new gen Panasonic and paying a little more.
So basically, my question is, is what I am seeing a common problem with these displays, or is it a defective unit?
Thanks.
discopaul 03-21-08, 03:05 AM I have a Sammy, not a 5084 and you should not see that. You either have a bad set or your settings are messed up. Look at the 84 series thread here and check there first before you send it back.
skeelo58 03-21-08, 03:17 AM I have the 5084, and I don't experience anything like what it sounds like you are. What are your picture settings? Do you have DNiE turned on or off? XV color? Some picture settings would help.....
crfracer290 03-21-08, 03:25 AM I have tried alot of settings from the Official settings thread and they all give me similar results.
Movie mode with DNIe has the least noise (I think) but it makes the blacks poorer and the whites yellower.
I am also experiencing a good amount of banding, but that does not bother me as much.
It is most noticeable when playing an HD DVD. The dark scenes in Transformers looks pretty bad and have alot of green dithering, and the entire Anchorman movie looks bad. (some of the few HD DVDs I have).
I am sure it is not the source because even when changing the TV menu to solid color, I get "dithering" or noise on the solid menu color.
skeelo58 03-21-08, 04:02 AM Hmmm, it is possible that there is something wrong with your TV then.
On another note, I ordered my 5084 from Vanns a few months back. without thinking, I threw away the box right away (stupid me). A few days later, I decided to white wash the screen, and to my dismay, I realized I had about 4 stuck pixels (stuck on purple). Calling and returning the TV to Vanns was not an option anymore, as the garbage guys already came and hauled away my box :( .
I was suspicious that I actually got a used TV after doing some thinking. The box came sealed and everything, but the TV didn't actually have that kinda gold sticker thingy that they put on the left side of the TV saying "FULL HD 1080" and all the other features.
Hopefully Vanns didn't send me a refurb. I have no way of knowing now, but all I can say is that the TV is holding up just fine.
E-A-G-L-E-S 03-21-08, 08:57 AM I owned a 5084 for about a month and it was a beautiful set....BUT, dithering is most definitely present, usually in dark uniform colors and blacks. It is really the only drawback to the 5084.
Bunga99 03-21-08, 09:52 AM I had the 5054 (not 5084) and had the same issues you have along with false contouring and macroblocking. If you have very good eye sight and are bothered by these things, then I would strongly suggest going with the Pioneer 5080. I did and so did EAGLES and a few others here. The processing on the Pioneer is superior. Not all folks notice dithering or false contouring. My wife, best friend, my wifes best friend and my brother could not notice the false contouring/dithering on my 5054 so they thought it was a great TV but I noticed it and did not care for it.
Good luck.
E-A-G-L-E-S 03-21-08, 09:55 AM I hope they improved it on the new ones.

I went thru 3 5084's a few months back. Really liked the set, just that everyone of them had burnt pixles & an off-centered panel (i.e. meaning that rows of pixels were hidden to the left or right) Very sloppy QC from the Samsung Mexico plant! Bought a Pioneer 5080HD & problem was solved. Lucky I got that Pio Plasma before inventory went away.
