Signs is a must-buy for me. My favorite sci-fi flick period.

I'll definitely get Signs. My 2nd favorite Shyamalan flick after Unbreakable(which I already have preordered).

I'll probably get both of these. I remember The Recruit surprised me...thought it was pretty good.

I wonder what aspect ratio The Recruit will be.

The tagline for Signs is "It's happening"?
And his new film is called "The Happening"?

So much for a twist ending.

Liked the music and sound on Signs. Might be a purchase, depending what else comes out around that time.

I wonder what aspect ratio The Recruit will be.

As my thread about the imports stated, it's 2.35.

I'm wondering if all the extras will be included as they weren't on the imports.

Agree, the music helps the mood, and is something you'll remember.

Signs is a must-have for me!!!

As my thread about the imports stated, it's 2.35...

That's strange since the DVD is 1.78 open matte per directors home release intent.

only commentary wasn't on UK release.

To me, that's one of the most IMPORTANT extras.

The same thing happened with The Rock and the commentary showed up on the US release.

Here's hoping...

Time for you to do some reading!

The UK BD release of "The Recruit" looks very good so it will be interesting to see how the domestic version compares.

It's going to look and sound the same unless BVHE offers 24-bit PCM audio.

I really liked The Recruit, I'll be picking that up.

There are too many other of my wants coming out that day to bother with Signs. TWBB, Cloverfield, The Recruit and at least 1 or 2 of the war movies all take priority.

Both are already on europe, the recruit for some time now, signs this past week.
I got signs and can say it is a solid 4 out 5 star release. it has minor issues like a bit of grain and some soft shots, but for the rest was GREAT.

Cool PCM track too.

Snake Plisken
05-17-08, 08:32 AM
yeah I bought it here in Ireland as well, and can confirm that it plays fine on my Region A PS3, for those interested in importing the Region B version. As Imeldhil said the picture is top notch for example when the alien is on top of the house and Mel Gibson sees it for a split instant you can really make out that its not Human :) so is the level of detail.
On the PCM 5.1 soundtrack is also excellent for example when they are running through the fields of corn for the first time to see the crop circles you are really incompassed in the soundfield, you can hear individual crickets in the surround channels.
So all in all very happy with this release :)

Thank you for those updates on Signs, sounds great! Couple more weeks (roughly), can't wait! :)

How is film grain an issue. DNR is an issue.

Imeldhil
05-17-08, 12:01 PM
DNR is not per se an issue, sometimes it helps, as muchas sometimes grain helps. I think either of them used too much is what sucks.

An example: Surf's up, a CGI animated movie with intentional grain just blew the movie for me.
As for DNR I can remember one that really blew the movie for me, just few scenes, like Pan's or face/off, but again, only few scenes.

I guess it's all up to personal taste isn't?

Anyway, you'll enjoy Signs if you get it.

Never considered the Vista Series DVD for Signs to be good for PQ. To read the BD is at least 4.0 for that is encouraging.

If so it's an automatic buy.

HDD review is up for "Signs".

Peter says 3.5 PQ and 4.5 AQ.

Somehow I feel folks aren't going to be happy with this BD for PQ as this isn't something that will pop and offer great eye candy. Time will tell.

That's the same score I gave Signs. PQ is poor for a
Disney release.

Good to read another positive. Thanks Shand and I should get mine tomorrow hopefully. I know what to expect from this film as I'm well acquainted with the SD DVD. I'm not looking for pop and eye candy to tell the truth.

Signs for Blu Ray dumps on the DVD - much better clarity, detail and color IMO, and of course none of the no no's (EE, DNR or compression gunk). I'm very happy with it...no, its not ref material, but it does look nice.

I watched a Netflix copy and though I don't have the standard dvd version, I can imagine that it is much better on BD. That being said, I also agree that it is definitely not one to pull out for a demo. One of M. Nights good movies.

I just finished watching this film on BD and was impressed with pq and sq.The PCM soundtrack was good but if you watch it in 7.1 it give an awesome surround image but when the aliens come to the house is like there running across your roof.

I agree - that one part when they finally broke in gave me a flashback to Master And Commander, the foot (alien ;)) steps running across an upstairs room in my house was freaky sounding, very convincing pan and fades that I never really noticed before!

Nice, that is what I want to hear! I wouldn't expect the PQ to mind blowing based on how it was in the theater but should be quite immersive due to the sound design.

I have no doubts about that, probably far better, same with the audio.

I'm just saying I wouldn't expect it to look a pristine, clear, razor sharp, or the term 3D pop that gets tossed around so much for whatever reason.

It's very good though, make no mistake! Here's a quick shot I took the other night (I needed a good shot showing my backlight anyway, used Signs since I was watching and fairly impressed).

Just got this and am very pleased, although there has been some DNR used to mitigate some of the heavy grain that was very visible theatrically - particularly in the first few scenes.

But, yeah, it lays the DVD to waste. I just wish these friggin' studio folks involved in the mastering of these titles would get their hands slapped everytime the reached for the DNR knob ;)

We're living in the NoNoise era (http://stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=120870&highlight=nonoise) of HD. I hope it passes quickly.
