View Full Version : There is a vicious rumor going around.
Postman17 03-21-08, 12:25 PM The rumor that I am hearing is that they are not making any more plasma Tvs. First, my wife tells me this. She said she over heard some Doctors talking about it at her job. Then a friend of minds comes to my house and tells me he heard the same thing. And to top that off, while my friend was at my house another friend calls me on the phone. He tells me he is in PC Richards & Son, and that a sale rep is telling him the same exact thing.
So if this little rumor is spreading, I am sure it will start to hurt the sales of Plasma Tvs. Has anyone else heard something to this effect. I hate these little nasty rumors and want some one in the know to debunk this for my peace of mind thank you.
Cleveland Plasma 03-21-08, 12:27 PM Plasma sales have been dropping to LCD. Why........"Hype". Plasma is flat out better. However the new LCD that will be 1.5" think and less will inpact the market even more when they hit.
Mach1Man 03-21-08, 12:28 PM This is an early "April Fools" joke right????
E-A-G-L-E-S 03-21-08, 12:30 PM I have had friends ask me the same recently.
Seems like the Pioneer news was taken as plasma was done. It is a shame that people seem to be spreading misinformation that will undoubtedly result in less plasma sales due to the uneducated consumer not knowing better.
Postman17 03-21-08, 12:37 PM I wish this was an April fools joke but this is whats spreading. I love Plasma and hate to hear such things.

I hear that rumor every year. Plasma gives a better picture and LCD gives you more options to work with in terms of size and weight, more people are opting to LCD but Plasma still has a strong following. Don't believe the rumors.
I heard Sony was going to stop making projection tv's but haven't heard anything about plasma's...
brentsg 03-21-08, 12:41 PM Unfortunately people are stupid and that cannot be fixed. I'd blame media in this case. Many of them ran the story with a subject line that would lead you to believe the sky was falling. You had to actually read the article in detail to realize the headline was nothing but an attention grab.
chris5977 03-21-08, 12:47 PM I own two plasmas that I love, but I think this certainly *could* happen in the distant future if the manufacturers simply aren't making a profit on plasma.
The only major manufacturer that I can think of that stopped making plasmas is Sony.
On the other hand there is Panasonic, who only makes small LCDs; and Pioneer who does not make LCDs at all.
The reports of the death of plasma are greatly exaggerated!
Cleveland Plasma 03-21-08, 12:48 PM Hitachi will be releasing a 1.5" LCD this year ;) <<<Click Here>>> (http://www.hitachi.us/1point5/)
claymanhb 03-21-08, 12:55 PM I've been hearing this a lot too. I can't believe pioneer dropped out. They make the best.

Nice and thin, but why is the bezel so ugly???
I think plasma will be around for the next 2 or 3 panel generations, but it's no secret that LCD is greatly increasing market share and manufacturing output while plasma is going the opposite way.
E-A-G-L-E-S 03-21-08, 01:04 PM If they can't find a way to get rid of blur I will never buy an LCD.

Same here, and they could do it pretty easily, but they don't want to.

Why don't they want to?
joemama127 03-21-08, 01:16 PM I'm sure this is related to the recent Pioneer announcements...many of the articles had titles such as "Pioneer quits plasma business" or even so far as "plasma is dead" or something of that nature. If people would take the time to read (and comprehend) even the articles with the sensational titles..they would find that not only is plasma not going away but also that Pioneer isn't leaving the plasma business. Funny how this combined with all of the ongoing plasma myths continue to survive yet the word hasn't gotten out that plasma is clearly the superior overall flat panel technology.
edit- also funny how lcd makers have been outsourcing panels and swapping parts among each other for years, yet nobody has sounded the alarm that lcd is on the way out. If Sony announced that they would cease lcd panel production (and buy from LG, Sharp etc..) would that mean that Sony was leaving lcd and the entire technology was on the way out?
PENDRAG0ON 03-21-08, 01:24 PM Why don't they want to?
Most of the ways to get rid of the blur would add flicker or decrease the overall brightness of the screen (neither would bother me at all) But they would have to get rid of the new motion enhancement modes (AMP for example) Black frame insertion or a dimmer frame inserted would both combat blur. An example of this working on an SXRD tv. (read the rest of the thread for the different theories for getting rid of LCD sample and hold blur.)

Sony already did that, they use Samsung panels in their TVs.
creemail 03-21-08, 01:33 PM 1. The biggest reason why LCDs will stay while plasmas will get the boot is because sales people from B&M stores push LCDs because of their higher margins over plasmas. People are now convinced that the future is LCD.
2. Next LCDs generate less power and less heat. This may not be a big deal to us as plasma owners, but these are features that may be significant to others.
3. LCDs are improving in performance to plasmas. The gap has now narrowed. We are starting see deep black level LCDs, better color accuracy, bright whites, great shadow detail.
4. People love the "brightness effect" when they walk into a showroom. Untrained people believe the brighter it is the better it looks. With the settings blasted to "Vivid", people/consumers have the impression that it looks better visually.
5. The 120Hz refresh rate has people excited! Many people can live with motion blur, but us plasma folks can't stand it. They believe it gives the picture a smoother look during heavy/fast action scenes.
When you add this all up, plasmas have significantly been the better technology, but have lost its market appeal to some consumers. Although we will always get the burn-in questions, I will always be a plasma owner!

Could you walk me through this in small enough steps so I can catch the logic of the chant "plasma is better but it doesn't sell as well as the LCDs because of hype".
Lets start with me driving up to a BB store, walking in, saying hi to the door guy, walking up to a TV wall full of LCDs and plasmas, looking at them and the prices and buying an LCD. According to the plasma camp I, and millions of other buyers, bought TV sets that are:
1. Worse
2. Cost more
Before you start typing, please, I beg you, don't even think about telling me that I bought an LCD because I have been brainwashed. Try something more original.
PS: I never once looked behind a TV set to see how thick it was. Nor will I ever.
E-A-G-L-E-S 03-21-08, 01:56 PM You bought it because it looked good in a store.
It does not look as good as a comparable plasma in a home.
If you can live with blur fine, but it 'destroys' watching 'anything' for me and many others.

Don't troll and get the thread locked please. The title of this section is Plasma, not Fair and Balanced. If you only want to read something that lines up with your beliefs then why not stay out of this part of the forum?
markrubin 03-21-08, 02:03 PM sorry...this will not work: the plasma Vs LCD debate goes on and on
