View Full Version : SL & SR Channel Levels & Crossovers

Have spent most of today setting up a Denon 2807 with my SVS SBS-01 5.0 with an SVS 25-31 PCi.

I used the Audyssey to set up the speakers and it gave me the following settings:

Crossover;
Front = 90 hz
Centre = 60 hz
Surround = 40 hz
LFE = 80 hz

Channel Level;
FL = +0.5
FR = +2.0
Centre = -2.0
Sub = -3.0
SL = -1.0
SR = -1.0

After this, the surrounds hardly had any sound coming from them (I had to have my ear right up to them to hear any noise). So I changed the Channel Level to the following:
FL = +0.5
FR = +1.5
Centre = -2.0
Sub = +1.5
SL = +3.0
SR = +3.0

Now I can hear the 'surround sound' effect much better when watching BD's (& the sub seems much better) but I still feel something isn't quite right. Now I am wondering if the crossover levels may be incorrect. But I have no idea about what they should be... I have read on here that people set their crossover to 80 hz but I'm not sure if this is LFE, or the front and surrounds. Looking at my settings can anyone point me in the right direction.

I haven't had any help as yet from the 2807 and Audyssey threads, so any help is MUCH appreciated.

many thanks

Based on the response curves on the SVS website, it looks like something in the range of 80Hz to 100Hz is where you should be set on all the speakers. Then, generally, you would set the subwoofer to the same value.

If you don't trust or don't like the Audyssey calibration, then either get a SPL meter and calibrate that way, or set it by ear so it sounds good to you. I'd suggest the former (SPL meter) for starters.

Also, not every movie and scene has big action in the surround channels. Turning up the levels until you get clearly obvious surround effect probably has them set too high. But hey, if that's the way you like it, so be it.

I think I'll take your advice and go and get an SPL metre.

Thanks for your help

Definitely get a SPL meter. I have the 3808ci and while the Audyssey calibration is very accurate, it can be wrong at times. Especially if the speaker is close to the microphone. I would set your crossover at 80hz and set the speakers as Small. Once you get a SPL meter, you can confirm the channel levels.
