to get the right sound coming out of my home theatre....instead of too low or too high.

In xp you definitely want it at 100 percent for music. Vista is likely as well. For movies, it does not matter, as the internal mixer is not touching the sound.

u have any reason for this?

Max volume. Lowering the volume in windows results in more distortion because it uses digital processing to accomplish it. Max volume is the closest you can get to a "pure" output, short of using ASIO or kernel streaming.

My understanding is that windows actually "removes" sound when the volume is lowered. So to achieve the full fidelity of the music, full volume must be used.

I've got my computer hooked up to my receiver with a toslink cable.
I have the comp. outputing at full volume and let the receiver
handle the volume to my ht speakers. No problems so far.

i heard setting it at full volume on my computer might mess my receiver up because the output voltage is higher than regular coaxial outputs.

i wish there was more info on this.

That's possible, but I doubt it. In any case that's what the volume control on your receiver is for. There's no real standard for output voltage from a source. Well, there is but nobody follows it. That's why people frequently complain about how their CD player is so much "louder" than their DVD player. Or vice versa.

i wish there was more info on this.
