View Full Version : Which blu-ray players play DVD-Audio? acampo 03-24-08, 09:36 PM I would really like to have just one player that plays DVD-Audio and Blu-Ray. are there any out there besides the discontinued panny 10a? schroedk 03-24-08, 09:45 PM None come to mind. If any manufacturer were to do it, I would expect it to be Panasonic. However, it doesn't look like the upcoming dmp-bd50 has support for DVD-Audio, either. I would be thrilled if it did, so I could finally unhook my Panasonic s-97s. tiggers 03-24-08, 11:04 PM As far as I know, only the future Oppo blu-ray solution plans on having DVDA (and SACD)l. And that's still in the 'phantom ware' universe. SiriuslyCold 03-24-08, 11:51 PM Denon did mention that in their second (or 3rd gen) BD players we'll see universal disc capability returning David Scott 03-25-08, 05:18 AM How about converting our current dvd-a discs to dts-hdma and re-authoring it to blu-ray? SiriuslyCold 03-25-08, 05:42 AM I think dvd-a is closer to Dolby-TrueHD in terms of encoding (both use some form of MLP) it would be ironic, releasing Dvd-Audio on bluray.. but would they (Sony) care, now? :D either way, no one has expressed any interest in releasing audio only (except for NIN (http://dvd-a.info/detail.asp?id=1694&w=Y) - and even then only 24b/96khz/2.0) most of the music releases so far has been concerts only. Perhaps profile 3.0 might change things but it may be too late (hirez audio downloads might have surpassed disc formats by then) frenchglen 03-25-08, 11:11 PM How about converting our current dvd-a discs to dts-hdma and re-authoring it to blu-ray? To encode in DTS-HD MA you need to buy an encoder which costs $1500! no thanks! Just rip DVD-A to WAV, and author blu-ray with...WAV! Who needs DTS-HD MA anyway, it won't improve the quality and there's plenty of room/bandwidth with blu-ray. Let's leave the expensive codecs to the movie studios who need to fit lots of video, languages and extras on the disc! I think that if a blu-ray music format ever takes off, it will all be in WAV. Unless they want to try and "protect" from easy copying inside a codec...but it's so easy to decode any old format these days, I think they'd just go the easy way and master the WAV straight to disc. TS45 03-28-08, 07:40 PM Waiting for universal blu-ray player, no reason to upgrade until. Or until blu-ray players get really inexpensive ( including the software.....!!!!), will then still have a Universal player such as our DVD- 2900. fresno1232001 09-01-08, 11:46 PM Two months ago I emailed Oppp and asked them if they were working on a BR player and, if so, would it play DVD-As? They emailed back and said they were working on a BR player and beyond that all information was proprietary!! So if Oppo "plans on" having DVD-A decoding on their BR player, you must have very serious inside connections with the top people at Oppo. Who are they? You will need Scenarist 4 or Sony's Blu Print. S4 = $150,000+ BluPrint = €300,000+ NONE of the cheap Abstraction Layer "authoring" tools can read DTS-HD MAS. frenchglen 09-11-08, 07:38 AM With what? There's no need to re-author it in DTS-MA anyway! Just extract and decode the MLP (for free), and author it as a PCM blu-ray (that's also gotta be free, I'm just not acquainted with the free/open-source blu-ray authoring apps yet). BD has PLENTY of space and bandwidth for uncompressed hi-res audio...the thing that still hurts the wallet is the cost of blank BDs. neil wilkes 09-11-08, 07:52 AM There's no need to re-author it in DTS-MA anyway! I have yet to see one that will import 5.1 PCM either. So far (Encore, DVDit HD) they are straight Stereo for LPCM, with 5.1 by Dolby Digital or Legacy DTS. Blu Ray is *not* the answer - except to a very silly question. filecat13 09-11-08, 11:31 PM Two months ago I emailed Oppp and asked them if they were working on a BR player and, if so, would it play DVD-As? I thought that was it, I had read it ages ago, but I wasn't sure enough myself. You CAN re-author DVD-Audio to blu-ray, with completely free software, with a home computer and on home blu-ray media. :p;) |
