I was wondering if anyone could help me

I have a RXV-1700. I'm trying to get HD audio out of my HD DVD player. All I can seem to get from it is MPCM. I try to change the audio settings it will flash to "dolby digital" for about 2 sec. then go back to MPCM. I've tried feeding audio through optic cable, and HDMI. I just can't seem to figure this out especially when I put a standard def disc in the sound will go right to dolby digital. I only get MPCM out of HD DVD

Thanks

Which HD-DVD player do you have? If it's not the A35 or XA2, you will not be able to bitstream Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA. The player will decode those formats and send them to your receiver as Multi-Channel PCM, which is correct. You are still listening to the lossless audio track.

Here is a really good read on the process.

I have tha A20. The reason this is "bugging" me so much is cause, I watch a standard dvd and the sound is amazing with my klipsch 5.1 system. then I put in a Hd dvd and the picture is awesome and the sound sounds.... almost compressed 9if you know what I mean) I have the dvd player set to bitstream

thank you

I have a similar setup as you are describing. Set the Toshiba sound to auto in the setup menu. This way if you are listening to a standard def dvd, you will get a bitsream of dolby digital 5.1 or dts (if those audio tracks are on the dvd) and the receiver will decode audio. If you have an hd disk with truehd or dd+, it will decode audio codec and send to receiver as pcm and you will get the lossless audio to your speakers. This is assuming that you are using HDMI from Toshiba to Yammy. The HDMI output of Toshiba will send the decoded or bitsream audio to the receiver. If you are using toslink or coaxial, you can only bitstream dolby digital or dts or 2 channel audio to receiver.
On some hd disks, you have to toggle between audio tracks by pressing audio button on remote while dvd is playing.
