View Full Version : Calibrating with an SPL Meter

I have posted a couple of questions on here asking for help setting up my new speakers (I initially wasn’t happy with the settings that Audyssey gave me) and people suggested using an SPL meter to check them. I have been out and bought one and am going to run through it today.
I have read through the SPL meter info on here and wanted to check that I have understood how to use it.
1) Should I make sure that the master volume on the AVR is at 0.0db prior to using the SPL meter (I have been listening to BD’s at about -20db since the Audyssey set-up)?
2) Should the front, centre and rears be calibrated to 75db?
3) should my subwoofer be set to 79db?

N.B. I am calibrating the following equipment:
Denon 2807
SVS-01 5.0 speakers
SVS 25-31PCi sub
Speakers are set to small with the crossovers currently at 80hz and the LFE set to 100hz

These were the settings that Audyssey originally gave me:
Channel Level;
FL = +0.5
FR = +2.0
Centre = -2.0
Sub = -3.0
SL = -1.0
SR = -1.0

Crossover;
Front = 90 hz
Centre = 60 hz
Surround = 40 hz
LFE = 80 hz

On my setup Onkyo 605 and Fluance 5.1 setup w/100w sub. I set all speakers to 100 and the LFE to 100 for the sub as well, then I setup the SPL for 100 and took the volume while in calibrate mode to 90 and set all speakers will the SPL read 0 and its been way better than the auto adjustment could do. I was close in my manual setting but tweaking with the SPL to the setting above you could hear the difference.
