Take your pick of two Panasonic DMR-EH75VS, only $1899 + $13.99 shipping, or $2097 + $13.99 shipping. Which one you want?
jmscott42 03-25-08, 11:58 PM I'm really kicking myself for not spending the $299ish they were clearing out of CC for this time last year. Really didn't have the money for a machine that would basically sit in the closet as a spare, didn't realise they were made of gold.. (what else has gone up 10x in a year?! ;) )
gerrytwo 03-26-08, 01:54 AM I wonder how many of these Panasonic DMR-EH75VS actually are sold for their listing prices.
Church AV Guy 03-26-08, 04:27 PM I have two and use them both a lot. Like others here, I have 500+ video tapes that I am processing over to DVDs. Of course, a lot less than half of those are worth converting, but the others are worth saving. I wonder if it would be worth selling one for those prices? Someone must have figured out that they were irreplaceable to pay that much for one. I *DO* agree, there is no evidence tht anyone had PAID that much, just that the sellers are ASKING that much. So, I have 4K worth of DVD recorders in my den.
Rammitinski 03-26-08, 05:26 PM I wonder how many of these Panasonic DMR-EH75VS actually are sold for their listing prices.Probably none, because those are probably the same two I saw there months ago. They were there for a few months even at that time.

Sorry, jm, those $2000 prices are for NEW units.
Used/like new units like yours are going for ONLY $1300 or so on Amazon! :D
RobbyTV 03-26-08, 06:48 PM I have a NIB one.
not sure what to do with it.
CitiBear 03-28-08, 01:50 PM These ridiculous psycho batsh*t Panasonic $$$$ you see as eBay fixed-price listings almost never actually sell. They're amusing, but are most often posted by delusional newbies with lottery dreams or power sellers with nothing to lose because they can run the listing for months at no charge to their accounts.
If you track actual eBay sales of Panasonics for ridiculous prices (I define ridiculous as anything approaching- never mind exceeding- the original retail), they are almost always due to a bidding frenzy on an auction-style listing. There are indeed some well-heeled fools who do pay $900 or $1100 for one of these units, but only if you bait them with a low starting price that makes them think they might actually be able to snag it cheap. If you list at a starting price of $1000, forget it. That's just human nature, eBay-style. So if you have an extra one of these that you paid "only" $300 for, your best bet might be to just sit on it. Sooner or later the burner and/or hard drive goes dead in every DVR, and repairs run $150: won't you be glad to have a brand new spare unit ready to swap in so you could repair the broken unit at your convenience without missing a beat?
Of course if you have a financial emergency and need quick cash, by all means sell it. But they are like betting on a horse race: be prepared that you might only break even, thats almost a lock with these recorders- a windfall profit depends on how many yuppies are looking for one that week and how many are up for sale. On a related note, I've seen Pioneer 640 DVR prices swing from $800 to $225 and back again several times this past year, with the highest prices paid for the *used* units! Go figure.
Rammitinski 03-28-08, 03:03 PM I believe the EH75V has some sort of feature(s) that you can't get on the newer ones which make it special. Maybe not $2000.00 special, but better than $300.00. Much better, I'd imagine, for one NIB.

There have been plenty of DVD Recorder/HDD and DVD Recorder/VHS combo units but the EH75V was the only DVD Recorder/HDD/VHS combo out there. And made in Japan. Bought one at J&R in 2006 for 400.00 and another last October at Circuit City in NYC for 200.00. Saw one (but did not buy) at a Long Island CC in December. So a few could be had at a good price as late as 2007.

Actually not quite true - the JVC DR-MX1 which predated the EH75V also was a DVD/HDD/VHS combo unit (I know, I own one) but I like the EH75V much better - probably because I am used to the Panny interface and also because the JVC had a quirk in that it recorded LP VR mode in 480x480 which caused my software converter programs to choke.
BTW just saw an EH75V go on eBay for about $700...
For about $500, I can pick up an inexpensive computer and tuner card. If I go with a little better computer and HD tuner card, the price would still be no where near $1600. I’ve been checking forum on home theater computers and that is my plan for next year.

Ahh yes, the MX1. I stand corrected. Thanks VF. I had forgotten, was that (MX1) the one that was out around 2004-05? I seem to recall a thread back then about a loading bug.
vferrari 04-03-08, 01:31 AM Yes, I tangled with the loading bug issue, but that was on the JVC DVD/VCR combo model MV-1 (which also predated most other brands combi recorders as well - JVC was into combo DVD/VHS recorders before being into combo recorders was cool, I guess - unfortunately they had design issues and I suffered early adopter buyer's remorse as a result.) Fortunately the MX-1 I owned did not suffer from the loading bug (knock on wood) but it had the other flaws mentioned above. Once Panny joined the combo game I was a happy camper> the EH-75 basically being my dream rig - then 2007 came along and the whole botched digital tuner thingy and lack of HDD products ruined everything.
That's about the time I went on record saying that the days of the optical disc were numbered due to ubiquitous high capacity HDD recording a la Tivo and cable co DVRs, online video on demand, and the ability to readily convert digital content to small form factor memory cards and portable media players such as phones, PDAs, or dedicated PMPs . I think DVDs and especially the high definition DVD format (Blu Ray) are a dying breed (the exit of the HD DVD format while looking like a positive move for consumers in the near term will only prolong the death rattle agony in the long run).
