View Full Version : Audio File Organization
Cracker747 03-27-08, 08:13 PM I started ripping some of my CDs to my PS3. Ideally I would like to set up a few different playlists. After ripping a few CDs I noticed that things are getting rather messy. All the audio files are dumped into the default audio folder. It would be nice to organize the files in separate folders, by album would be ideal. I could then go through and add individual tracks to playlists. Has any one had any experience, or any suggestions, on how the audio files can be organized on the PS3?? There must be a better way.
Are there any tools available, or guides, on how to setup/use the PS3 as media server??
Thanks in advance for your help!!

Go to the audio folder and change "group content" to "by album".
It sounds like it's on show ALL right now.
You can create folders if you need to.
Push the [] (square) button, it will sort on artist, album, genre, and ... maybe something else.
You can't create folders though.
It really is messy if you have a lot of music. Try scrolling from "AC/DC" to "Zappa" when you have 50 gigs of music sometime... ZZZzzzZZZZzzzz
Playlists are alright though, I created a few of my favorite artist/albums, they appear right at the top.
XMB was not meant to be a model of efficient organization.... just to be easy to use with a simple game-pad type interface.

Yes, you can.
You can select any song/picture/file with triangle and rename the album it goes to, it will create the new album without affecting the parent album.
You are better off storing the content on a PC and using a media server to stream it. A good media server will have better media management. I use Twonkymedia. You can also use TVersity, WMP11, others.
joeblow 03-28-08, 11:14 AM ^^^ That method (PC streaming) prevents you from hearing your own music in-game. Once that becomes a staple feature (it's only in a few titles right now), people will want hundreds of tunes on their PS3.
Thanks for the tips T_D_K.
I'm not a gamer, and didn't even know that. For normal music listening, a streaming setup is so much better due to the rather poor native PS3 media management. Twonkymedia is very good for this.
ickabod665 03-30-08, 08:23 AM Personally, i find it better to have the music stored on the PS3. Like the previous poster said, it is somewhat annoying having to scroll from AC/DC to Zappa, but that's my only complaint. A quick push of a button to sort by Album, or artist, or by 1st letter of the track title, along with the ability to set up playlist folders is all i really need as far as management. Well, that and a "skip to" feature to get rid of the scrolling annoyance. But i don't need to have my computer on when playing music, i don't have any lag when clicking on a new song, and running WMP11 or Tversity as a server with my laptop did serve as a bit of a resource hog on the laptop which slowed other things down.
I really wish an update would allow for playlists from an external drive. I've got a 40gb Ps3 and My music is on a WD Passport 250. So I have to copy any of my collection over to the ps3 that I want to put in a playlist. If they would implement this I dont think I would ever have to upgrade my harddrive.

ickabod665 03-30-08, 10:43 AM I can empathize with that. Fortunately, i've got a 60gb ps3 with just under 10gb of music, so i'm ok there. Plus i've also got a 250gb passport for anything else i might want to put on the drive.
Which leads to my next point. What i wish they would enable would be a continuous play feature for videos. I've got the Looney Tunes volumes 1-5 on my external (yeah, you read that right), and it would be nice to just let it play one cartoon after another. This having to manually start a new cartoon after each cartoon ends garbage is for the birds. Imagine having to hit the 'play' button each time a song came to an end to start a new song. Criminy.

Try it when you have 250 gb streamed through TVersity! Pretty much not good for anything but shuffle play.
