View Full Version : Another benefit of RPTV
While browsing TVs the other day, I noticed a benefit of RPTV that had never occurred to me before. If you are putting the TV in an entertainment center, with an RPTV you can position it so that the screen in flush with the front of the furniture. That gives a nice uniform look across the front of the setup. LCD and Plasma sets, however, generally have feet that extend forward of the screen. So the screen would have to sit a few inches back in the furniture to allow the feet to fit on the shelf. Not as nice in my opinion.
nickels55 03-28-08, 04:53 PM The biggest benefit is the extra $$$ in my wallet from buying a RPTV over a LCD or Plasma.
The fact that I can't hang it on my wall doesn't bug me one bit.

Only prob with RPTV is the viewing angle..
videobruce 03-29-08, 10:18 AM Not a whole lot different than LCD.
Besides, who watches TV (the proper way) off to the side? ;)

Horizontal viewing angles are not THAT bad for newer RPTVs. Vertical viewing angles are more critical, it's important to have the right height stand (low, mine is 16.5" which is just right for typical couch heights).

SSE is only a problem if you're watching too close. At optimal viewing distances, it's not an issue, it certainly isn't with my 60A3000 and wasn't with my 60XS955.

Be careful about putting a RPTV in an entertainment center. First, they are typically too high for RPTVs, vertical viewing angles are critical for RPTVs. Second, make sure there's enough space around the TV to allow for proper cooling.

And rolled up sleeves with ciggarettes in the fold is the in style still.

As well as geometry issues on many.(though correctable on some)
The viewing angle horizontally is pretty good, but the vertical is not but that isn't too important.
I don't believe the image quality is quite as good as the top plasmas though...but they are cheaper.
They use a little less power which is nice.
DavidHir 03-31-08, 11:27 AM Calibration also affects SSE as does obsessing the issue. ;)
nickels55 03-31-08, 11:46 AM SSE is only bad while watching hockey, otherwise I never see it (on 99% of normal TV shows it is non-existent).
videobruce 04-02-08, 08:48 AM And rolled up sleeves with ciggarettes in the fold is the in style still. Sounds as another Plasma fan boy lost his way................
I just wonder how many of these thing have fallen off the way so far and will in the future when the owners try to swap cables around and put too much force on the mount trying to get at the back of the set? ;)
E-A-G-L-E-S 04-02-08, 11:11 AM Depends if they they are dults or not I suspect.
I have personally owned three RPTV sets, four plasmas and a Marantz PJ.
I liked all but one of the three RPTV's.
Different strokes for different folks.
But I do know: (going from RPTV to plasma-all high quality sets)
Pro - I gained a better overall image.
Con - I lost 11" in screen size.
**On a side note, there is nothing more childesh on this board than people calling other grown adults "fan boys". Please.
videobruce 04-02-08, 11:24 AM Except ones that push one technology over another without mentioning the pitfalls. The same ones that get bent out of shape when those pitfalls are brought up.
E-A-G-L-E-S 04-02-08, 11:27 AM Who's bent out of shape? Just talking here.
Did I mentin any pitfalls of RPTV's? Did I get upset about anyone saying anything about plasma image qulaity? I only mentioned that one should be fine with any minimal work on the back of a panel if they knew what they were doing when they mounted it and bought a quality mount.
I actually have many posts about my three RPTV sets and for the most part they were all glaringly positive.
Sounds like you are the one worked up.
