I am lost. I have cable connection downstairs and I have my computer with a modem upstairs.

I was told my my electrician I can just purchase a modem for downstairs and connect the ps3 to the modem with the cable with a ethernet cord?

Then BB tell me all i need is a wireless router up in my computer room.

I told my electrician ideally i need to run an ethernet line. He said the cable line is your access out to the internet just use a modem.

So I go to BB and buy a wireless router and I can not get it to connect.

Question is do I really need a wireless router and is my electrician a Moron.

And if I do need wireless router (which I have) how come I cant get it to connect. I ran the linksys cd wrt54g set everything up using WAP. Went into PS3 tried to connect automatically no go, tried inputting all the IP addresses codes etc. No go.

I am fed up. I want to choke my electrician along with BB, Ps3 Linksys etc.

Just kidding. But please help.

Yes, you need a router if you plan on connecting more than one thing to your modem. Or you could just connect your PS3 directly to your modem and forget any special settings.

Wireless is just that, a wireless solution for connecting to the internet. If you want to run cables then run cables. Some people don't want cables running through their house so they go wireless. Also, wireless isn't the best way to hook your PS3 to the internet if you're going to be online gaming.

My best advice for getting the PS to connect is to go to your computer and check all your router settings VIA your web browser. Then transfer all the correct info to the PS.

it's just like any computer. you're not going to connect it to a modem. unless you're connecting it directly to your cable modem. since you have your router, you can either plug it in wired or you can set it up wireless. if you've never set up a wireless network before, it's not as simple as plugging it in and automatic connection just like a wired router. read your instruction manual and it should tell you how to set it up properly and secure your connection. instead of setting up a computer like the manual will tell you, do the same for the ps3.

First off... it's good that you bought a router regardless of if you are going to use it with your PS3 or not. The router will will protect your computer from internet threats; it's not safe to have your computer connected directly to your modem.

Next... make sure your router is connected directly to the modem and then your computer should connect to the router. Sounds logical but I have seen it done incorrectly.

Now you need to make sure that your PS3 is set to wireless connection. Out of the box, the PS3 is set to be "wired" and the wifi is turned off. You can turn it on in the Internet connection settings or something like that. Check the PS3 menu and you will find it... pretty intuitive. It has a wizard setup that should walk you through finding your wireless network and connecting to it.

After trying that... post back if you still have trouble getting it to connect. BTW, I game all the time with my PS3 conected wirelessly and I get the same connection strength as when I am connected directly to my routed va an ethernet cable.

Hope this is helpful.

Sorry to hijack, but I've had this problem since I bought my PS3 and could use some advise. I'm trying to connect through wifi to my router. I know the router works because I connected my Wii wirelessly without any problems. On the PS3, I go through the connection wizard, choosing automatic for everything, but the PS3 can never find my ip address.

No problem. I can not for the life of me get the ps3 to connect wirelessly. I have the settings in place. Obviously something is incorrect. IP address maybe its crazy.

You guys that are having trouble connecting wirelessly, try giving your PS3 a static IP. I seem to remember reading somewhere that helped*.

*All of my devices are static, so I actually don't have any experience using DHCP on my PS3.

I can't believe nobody has pointed out that the electrician was a moron. You can't get a 2nd modem and simply hook it up for another Internet connection. Unless, of course, you paid for a 2nd IP address from your Internet provider.

When I had a problem mine was due to the firewall on the modem. Changed that to DMZ (I think) and I was connected. Oh I have the same wireless modem and I believe I manually entered all the ports that Sony has open.

I agree. Im very upset with him. He did a lot of opening of the walls for HT stuff and he did not cover the floors with anything so my NEW wood floors look like ****. My wife and I spent 5 hours last night cleaning and it still has a film on it.

Still do not have this PS3 connected. It shows I have 100% strength but I cant get it to connect. says failed when run a test. I know it recongnizes the wireless router, but something is wrong.

I use a powerline adapter to connect my PS3 when it's in the bedroom. It uses your electrical wiring as a network. This is the product I have:

Panasonic BL-PA100KTA Ethernet Adaptor Starter Pack

No configuration required. Just plug one unit into your router and plug the other unit anywhere in your house (depending on how your house is wired).

Disagree. I have my PS3 connected via wireless and online gaming (COD4, Motorstorm etc) all run flawlessly. No issues at all.

Contrary to what most think, you don't need ridiculous dl speeds to play online, my pings are great and that is what matter most.

fit,
I have the linksys router wrt54g as well...and it can be a tricky bird to set up. I would suggest you start all over. Run the setup disk on your pc and get it working there first...with one excption, don't turn on security for wireless (at least until you can get a connection). Once you have done that and can get to the internet via your computer, go the the ps3 and run the "network" setup there. Ps3 should find your "router" right away and connect. Once you have done all of this, then go back to the pc and turn on security via the ip address (192.168.1.1 ... username blank, password admin). Once you have done this and verify it works with the pc, then go back to the ps3 and run network config again...this time you will be prompted for the password. Should work fine after this.

If you have disconnect problems, you may have to assign a static ip and put it in the dmz (I had to do this...and I have a wired connection).

One little tip, make sure you have ssid broadcast to enabled...otherwise the ps3 will not be able to see it....

Hope this helps...

First question no one asked....
Do you currently have internet?
Second question...
Is is DSL or Cable?

Easy from there...
Hook up DSL or Cable line to your Modem (If you currently have internet you already have a modem)
Then I would ask how many computer/internet devices do you own and currently need hooked up?
Then do you currently already have a router or do you in fact need one?
Then you can hook up your devices to your router and set them up.

Glad to hear it. FYI, I use wpa as opposed to wep (for security)...easier to set up (wep, you have to type in the whole key..wap, just a word or phrase...)

WPA also has better security then WEP.

I have DSL at my house. My laptop connects wireless to the web everytime. I just recently bought the ps3. I followed all the steps to set it up wirelessly. Althought the ps3 can detect my ip address fine and can detect my ssid (router), it still won't connect. I press the "test connection" but it always fails!
Any other advice?

As stated WAP security uses a phase... you can change the random letters in the pass phase field that came w/the router to a word of your choice. I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't do this initially and just tried to use what they had entered. L's look like i's an Zero's look like letter O's... it could be a problem with your security entry.

This page (http://maikelv.be/blog/2007/10/27/ps3-and-linksys-wrt54g-the-solution-2/#more-9) is helpful when setting up a static IP on the wrt54g.

Or you can check this out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU).... not as helpful though.

I have the same setup to DSL and get the same results. Wireless card on my laptop allows me to enter the WEP security key. Will the PS3 also allow me to enter the key?

Mulder, Thanks,Great idea. Do you have to plug these Adaptors directly into an outlet or can you plug them into a surge suppressor or extension cord and then into an outlet?
