Hey guys - I've never used one of those driving wheels, but I love driving games (Burnout, Gran Tourismo, etc).

How do you use them (from a practical viewpoint). Logistically speaking, I sit in my recliner in my living rooom and play the PS3 from there. I can't see how I would use one of those wheels (let alone the pedals).

Sell me!

Great thread I'm inerested in this aswell. Raced online on the pc for about 5 years and I have a momo attached to my desk. But for the ps3 and my recliner I'm having a hard time coming up with something that will hold steady to really do some good racing with my momo on the ps3. Sell me aswell with some great ideas with GT,P coming out I would hate to lose a race cause I wasn't using a wheel.

I don't know about Burnout, but a wheel is a big advantage (and three times the fun!) in Gran Turismo.

Once you use a wheel you'll never go back!!

here's my simple & cheap set up.
Get a old chair (I got a metal desk chair at a garage sale for $1) Cut the back off remove the seat cushion & mount the wheel.
It's the right hight for sitting in a recliner & easily stored away so the GF acceptance factor is high & using a wheel makes driving games a lot more fun IMO.

I just picked up GT4 for $12.99 used yesterday so maybe I'll check for a driving wheel used or at a good price. I also plan to pick up GT5.

First things first I suppose and then I'll worry about the cockpit later if I get a good deal on the wheel.

I'd have to agree with this. After buying a cheaper wheel a while back, you do get what you pay for. The G25 is a beast, and nothing touches it for gameplay realism

Bob Earl Racing seats do look awesome but do wish there was a place to place your keyboard. Hmm wonder if he can do a special order. If not maybe my welding degree will finally have a purpose lol. Man I just hope GT and others will make me forget about NR2003 lol prolly not but will still definitly have a ball while trying :).

How did you get your G25 to work with GT4 on your PS3?

Rock Daddy

I never had an issue but it seems some that did fixed it but the sequence you start things up. I can't remember if it was make sure the wheel and everything for it is powered and connected before you start the PS3 (or maybe the game) or you plug it in after you start the PS3 then start the game. Try a few diffrent combinations but it does work one of the ways. Its the only way I would play it.

I had a lot of difficulty getting my g25 to work with GT4 as well and gave up months ago (just assumed it wasn't compatible). After seeing this thread, I decided to give it another try and I finally got it working. If you have any other usb peripherals plugged in -- UNPLUG them (usb dongle, web cam etc)!! It did the trick for me and hopefully will help you as well.

I plan to buy the G25 wheel sometime in the next month, but Im just not sure where to mount the thing so i can sit on my comfy leather couch in front of the big screen. Has anyone seen any great ideas or plans to make something? Ive not found much googling yet.

I had considered the Bob Earl Racing Chassis or a playseat but im not really sure i want to spend the money or how comfy the seat would be since Im a really big guy.

When there wasn't a wife/GF approval factor to consider, I just nailed together some scrap lumber to make what amounted to a table.

I happened to have some 2x4s and plywood around, so it was pretty easy. It had two vertical lengths of 2x4, 4 horizontal pieces (making sort of a "c" shape with the vertical pieces), one cross piece of 2x4 on the top about halfway between the back and front, and some plywood to cover the top and most of the back, and two little triangles of plywood to reinforce the joint at the bottom.

Basically, it was as cheap, quick, and dirty as I could possibly make it with it still being sturdy enough to not fall apart. I didn't end up being heavy enough on its own, so I had to put my mini floor jack on top of it to weigh it down when I was using it. (even the DFP can generate a lot of force)

I always post this pic of my setup in these kinds of threads. Sorry for those that see it ever time ;) But for the others its good info. This is the "Playseats Evoluition" chair. If you are geting some resistance from the wife becauce something made isn't looking good enough for the living room you could offer this setup. I have a nice spot in the corner of the living room now that it looks good sitting in. It has the G25 setup on it BTW.

Out of curiosity.. what makes the G25 so much better than other wheels? My friend loves the GT series as much as I do, and he had a couple wheels, one he said was $150 or so. I think it was the Force Pro by logitech.. http://www.superwarehouse.com/DRIVING_FORCE_PRO_WHEEL_FOR_PLAY_STATION_2_ONLY/963293-0403/p/319911. He hated it and said he'll never get another wheel. I guess the force feedback was too high and it was hard to steer. I guess he couldn't "palm" it, you had to two hand it the whole time. I trust his opinion on just about everything because we are very simliar that way, but I was thinking of trying out a wheel when GT5 comes out and I don't want to drop $300 on something I don't like to use. Is it probably very simliar to the driving force pro, but just has pedals too?

I like that it has a seporate shifter that can be used as an H pattern Stick on games that support it. In other words its not just up and down, its like a real stick shift. GT5P supports that and also supports the clutch. So for shifting, its way ahead of most. I love using it in full H pattern clutch shifting mode!

Other then that it is just high quality for the bigger bucks. Its a very nice leather covered wheel.

RockDaddy,

It looks like a cockpit in a car! I beat you really enjoy playing with that setup. :) I'm just tooling around with the controller for GT4 I bought the other day.

Seriously though I don't think I would go anything more than what The Moose has if I do.

Yep its the butkicker gamer under the seat. It pretty good. I have to really power it up to get a good feel of it but its not mounted very well. If you engineered a better metal point to mount it I bet it would work really well.
Sometimes it goes off if Im over using it, must be from heat and as soon as it does I can't play it. It feels like the game is totally missing something. If you spend enough to go this far the last 100 is no biggy. ;)

It was suggested to me that I build an Ottoman that could hide and stow the wheel and peddles when not in use. Ideally, in my mind, it would have some sort of fold out mount as well. I haven't seen solutions though. Post what you find out as I'm curious as well.

I don't understand the whole H-pattern thing...if the G25 has a six-speed gearbox, why would you use a simple H-pattern?

Question for anybody with the G25: are you forced to use the clutch to shift gears with the shifter itself? I've seen wheels & shifters where you can row the paddles regardless of whether the clutch is pushed down...I do not want this!

I'm assuming since everyone says the G25 is about as good as you can get from a realism standpoint, that you have to press the clutch to shift. Just want to be sure though.

Perhaps. When I think of a six-speed box, I imagine this pattern. (http://www.autotintdesign.com/BMW%20Accessories/Gear%20Knobs/SIX%20SPEED%20GEARKNOB%20CENTER.jpg) Of course, there are variations with the reverse gear.

I always thought an H-pattern was a simple four-speed gearbox like you'd find in a NASCAR or some of the older arcade racers.

Im sorry, what I meant is each gear has a position vrs just a gear shifter that is up and down only like everything else that is out. :)
So yes it has 6 speeds and a reverse, each wioth its own position.

That's the pattern except revers is in, right and down or at least that's how it feels anyway since I haven't actually used the gear shifter yet. The only game I played with it so far is Paradise City and you don't shift and both the brake and clutch act as the break and reverse. I personally thing the brake and gas are too far apart but maybe I'll get used to it and I'm not sure I like the "E" brake on the left button on the steering wheel but again, I'll probably get used to it.

I got the same exact setup as you last week in preparation for GT5:P.

I'm curious though... do you brake and use the clutch with your left foot and do the gas with your right foot? The bar between my legs doesn't allow me to touch the brake with my right foot.

I'm wondering how shifting and breaking will be possible at the same time since only 1 foot can be used.

Edit: Nevermind... I see I put the foot pedal plate in the wrong position... I was able to move it to the right a few inches and now all is good :)

I think this is the way to go....if you have a problem like me with where to store it when not in use.

But the only problem I would have with this Wheelstand Pro.......is the weight of the unit...only 9 lbs. I don't think it is worth the price they are asking.....there don't seem to be that much to it to make

Being a Machinist by trade...I am going to make my own with the same comcept as The Wheelstand....but belive me ...it going to be have more weight and stronger and to have the cables exit from the bottom.......been collecting scrap metal at work

I too have the playseat, G25, buttkicker combo - I found a post on another forum that provided a quick mounting solution for the buttkicker. Use an extra 8-10 mm socket as a spacer between the buttkicker clamp and the bottom support tube on the playseat - the socket fills in the gap between the clamp and tube. You can tighten it down tight. As the socket is also metal the buttkicker vibration effect transfers to the chair very nicely

To get more "power" from your buttkicker turn up the SW output of your receiver - you can then lower the vol of the sub.

The buttkicker can be had for $50 from a few flight sim shops on line - i got mine new for $50.00 and $10.00 shipping the box weights 13 lbs!
