View Full Version : Help hasten the death of my Sony Trinitron CRT
I need some help to subtlety kill off my crt tv.. its 32 inch sony trinitron and I need it to break in some form preferably getting the tuner or screen to get a little messed up. Had it for a while 8 years at least but some people wont allow me to throw out a "perfectly" working tv. The reflections are killing me, the volume button changes channel and the video inputs is busted but they are dead set against throwing it out. I thought about using a strong magnet on the screen but i dont know where to get one.. any suggestions to just mess the appearance up without opening the tv will be appreciated! Help a desperate man wanting to join the HD world out!!
raouliii 03-30-08, 07:58 AM In good conscience, I can't help break your set, but running a portable electric drill around the tube should magnetize portions of it and should result in very obvious color impurity. This is not permanent damage to the set and if the set has an integrated degausser, the color impurities will slowly go away. BTW, even a refrigerator magnet will create small amounts of color impurities.
aaron.d 03-30-08, 08:38 AM I vote for cracking it open while its plugged in and running. Poke around for a bit, aim for the capacitors. That way your sisters will be able throw you out with the TV. Problem solved.
raouliii, in all senses it is broken, i cant connect any video inputs without having to jiggle the connectors for a good 5 mins then taping the position down. The only thing that seems to work is the cable input and the picture on the tv even that is grainy but still watchable. Ill try the portable drill.
aaron.d if you dont have any thing productive to contribute dont post...
trivial 03-30-08, 06:04 PM There's something to be said for these weird threads that give us old heads a chance to play like we're Wavy Gravy at Yasgurs'.
Or Hannibal Lecter at Vergers'.
Gather up a couple hundred bucks, or the intestinal fortitude to resolder the jacks and cover your bare bulbs. People here like tubes, and they're full of lead, so breaking them on purpose is irresponsible.

Wow your family is cruel to make you watch this set. Some hardware stores have strong magnets, but maybe you will be forced to watch the set with the magnet streaks in the picture.;)
WJonathan 03-30-08, 11:19 PM I heard there was a freak storm of sledgehammer turbulence over your neighborhood this afternoon, if that helps.
aaron.d 03-31-08, 06:38 AM ok well here is some advice in all seriousness.
Go buy the TV you want anyway, you are a grown up, presumably you have the money to spend, it's really your choice (if you dont have the money to spend then you shouldnt be looking).
THe tv is perfectly good though, maybe not for YOU, but it might be nice to find someone who really could use this tv and donate it. That way you stand a chance of keeping it out of the landfill, and you might make someone happy.
Once you get rid of the old TV, you dont really have a choice but to purchase a new set.

It was never money as an issue... just space the crt takes up alot of space and aaron.d that is what I am going to do. As punishment for not allowing me to donate and make room for the new tv the new set will be for my personal use, they can stick with the aging dinosaur. That should teach them.

you should try to donate it to your local GoodWill or SArmy Store and they will pick it up.
if you put it on Craigslist and put FREE in the title it will be gone the same day.
or.......while the tv is unplugged pour a glass of water down the back!
have a fire extinguisher near by just in case.:D
Sandman209 03-31-08, 03:08 PM Take it out to a bar/pub and get it real drunk then say you have to use the bathroom and just leave. Now you're free to buy one of those the sexy thin HD sets you've been dreaming about....
Seriously though, if you're young (which it sounds like since your asking for ideas on how to destroy your tv so you can get a new one) just tell people the truth. Maybe someone will take it from you if they know it's working fine. If you're an adult and feel funny about throwing it out, donate it to Salvation Army. Or, just hold onto it for a while and maybe later on you'll find someone who can take it.
I have a 32 inch sony crt and I love it. I really want an HD tv also but I don't mind watching standard defintion! And afterall that's all this really is: a mind game....(?)

I had a 32XBR last year but when I moved up to a 36XBR800 with the Sony Stand I think I died and went to heaven. the picture quality, piano black bezel and matching stand are gorgeous!

May I suggest putting old leftover pasta water in a cup and walking into the room "accidentally" tripping over yourself spilling it all over the tv.
Kansas Beachboy 02-16-09, 02:18 PM This sounds like a spoiled teenager whose parents won't buy him his own huge flatscreen TV. I had an acquaintenance in high school much like this....her parents bought her a brand new car when she turned 16, but it wasn't as "cool" as she wanted, so she and her friends proceeded to see how fast they could destroy it, hoping daddy would buy her the cool Camaro she really wanted. Guess what? Daddy was smarter than she thought he was. After she managed to destroy her new car, daddy said "so sorry, your old bicycle is still in the garage. Get used to it".
